Terry Crews is no stranger to art and design. Behind the brawn, bullets and laughs is a renaissance man from Flint, Michigan, who, as a teen, got his first big break after high school with an art scholarship at the prestigious Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. This was followed by an Art Excellence scholarship and a full-ride athletic scholarship for football at Western Michigan University.
Aire
In 2016, Crews attracted the attention of Jerry Helling, president and creative director of the influential furniture maker Bernhardt Design. “Jerry said, ‘I want to work with you’”, told Crews to the LA Times. “He said, ‘I know you’re an artist and an illustrator and I want you to design your own collection’”. The actor took a year to design a collection that would be presented in May 2017 at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York.

The Terry Crews Collection by Bernhardt Design was inspired by a modern contemporary style, but also by Ancient Egypt. Crews wanted to know how would pharaohs of that distant civilization be living nowadays. “I began envisioning what modern contemporary furniture would look like if Egypt was the dominant world power. What would an evening in a luxurious, modern Egyptian palace look like?”, said Crews. He was deeply influenced by the fluidity and worship of water, citing the Nile River as the centre and life source of Egypt at the time.
Lilypad
This Egyptian line follows the entire 5-piece collection. Float tables and Aire benches recall stones in the Nile. Crews intended to create the first table/sofa, so the swivelling Lilypad lounge chair with ottoman is designed to look like it floats. Each piece is customizable using options that include polished or matte black stainless steel, American walnut and a selection of Bernhardt leathers and textiles. After being presented in May of this year, the collection is now available for purchase.
