Born in 1926 in Lisbon, Júlio Pomar studied at Escola de Artes Decorativas António Arroio and Escolas de Belas-Artes de Lisboa e Porto (Porto Academy of Fine Arts). In 1942, it was what can be considered as his first exhibition in Porto to show his first drawings. During those years, he opposed to Salazar’s dictatorship, that put him into jail for four months. One of his drawings was caught by the police. And the paintings he made to Batalha Cinema in Porto, with more than 100m2, were also apprehended. In 1963, Júlio Pomar moves to Paris. His last years were shared between Lisbon and Paris.
His extensive portfolio includes not only paintings and drawings, but also sculpture, pottery, engraving, and, impressively, writing and poetry.
