Following his first highly successful exhibition at the Arts Ménagers de Paris in 1953 – from which a number of emblematic pieces are being produced by Ligne Roset today, such as the Daybed banquette, le Secrétaire mural or the TV chair –, Pierre Paulin deepened his collaboration with Thonet France, for whom he was meant to design furniture for offices and contract use and domestic furniture until 1958. Amongst his first designs were the CM 141 desk (1954), which has figured in the Ligne Roset collection since 2008 under the name Tanis, and the CM 131 chair (1953).

The two Thonet products, desk and chair, were truly discovered by the public in August/September 1954 at the exhibition Les Jeunes et le Cadre de Vie, which was held at the SAD (Salon des Artistes Décorateurs) at the Grand Palais. In 2018, 10 years after the reissue of the CM 141 desk, Michel Roset and Paulin took the decision to reissue the CM 131 chair, struck by the freshness of a chair which was celebrating its 65 birthday. Since the base of this chair was in lacquered round steel tubing, it was decided to offer the Tanis desk with a similar base (as it existed originally) alongside the current version with a square-section steel base.

The Cáliz is a gorgeous table lamp in the shape of a bowl. In his creative process, designer Stephan Veit explains that, when “a design unveils its creative idea, and if I find what it tells me pleasing, this is when things become very interesting. The idea for the Cáliz light? The classic table lamp in a deconstructed form…the shade floats in a transparent glass chalice”.

Geoffrey Mirror and Clothes Stand by Alain Gilles

After W8, a small item designed to take its place beside a settee or bed, Ligne Roset now brings us Geoffrey for 2018. The perfect illustration of the concept of ‘simplexity’, Geoffrey is a simple mirror/clothes stand which is easy to understand, but much ‘richer’ than it would seem at first. Its pared-down design makes it minimalist, yet its dimensions render it spectacular. “I think I have come to understand, perhaps quite recently, that I am happy when my masculine and feminine sides come together, even if one is a little more evident than the other”, explains the designer Alain Gilles. “Since I am a man, the basic shape has a tendency to lean towards the masculine and is then counterbalanced by the other side. I like it when a creation offers up several stories, several ‘ways in’. Or when one finds two or even three products in one. I want to offer flexibility”. Thus, Geoffrey contrasts its masterful, virile black lacquered steel structure with the subtle delicacy of its small brass-coated steel trinket holder. A mirror to check one’s reflection, a dish for one’s keys, a rail on which to hang a scarf or umbrella: Geoffrey is a highly graphic useful object which is, at once, stable and light, with a spectacular presence whilst ‘opening up’ the space around it thanks to its large mirror.

The Hako collection (hako means ‘box’ in Japanese) was designed in 2013 and was in production until 2015. In 2018, Michel Roset decided to reissue two key pieces: the bookcase and a table/chest. To designer Philippe Boisselier, this collection “plays the card of modesty and detail”. The intention was to offer essential pieces with the focus on their function. The bookcase and table/chest work just as well as parts of a coherent whole as they do easy additions to an existing interior scheme. In their quality of materials and finishes, rightness of proportion and attention to detail, these useful pieces provide an elegant response to the wanderings of exponential design. They offer light, timeless solutions to the requirements of a multifaceted everyday life and will fit easily into most domestic landscapes.

Paipaï Loveseat by Lucidi Pevere

The design process must be a perfect balance between the designers’ objectives and the company’s requirements. As with the Alburni tables and the Backpack chair, Paipaï offers us a completely original concept. Paipaï is a project which unfolded from a simple gesture: folding a piece of paper to create a closed shape. As in origami, from a flat surface Lucidi Pevere has designed simple fold lines. First the one which separates the back from the seat, then the more obvious one for the armrests. The two extremities of the back are folded towards the structure to which they are fixed. And, thus, a visibly comfortable cocoon seat is born.

The folds mark the foam, shaping its contours and giving emphasis to the armrests, thus creating the identity of the settee, which was named after the Paipaï fan which itself has a characteristic rounded shape. Comprising a three-seat settee, a love-seat and a footstool, the range is suitable for both contract and domestic use. The Paipaï collection was designed to offer the best possible seat comfort thanks to the height of the back and the judicious use of high-performance foams. Paipaï is rendered super-soft with the use of ultra-flexible foam. Its armrest is highly technical. It is made from a technical fabric, a composite on a felt backing and finished in the lower section with a metal piece which links the armrest to the rest of the seat.
