Ritz Paris Hotel | A Legacy of Elegance and Excellence

November 30, 2024

Designed by architect Charles Mewès, the Ritz Paris is a stunning example of opulent French architecture, inspired by the grand palaces of Versailles. Since its inauguration in 1898, the hotel has undergone significant expansions, including the merging of adjacent buildings and the adaptation of parts of the hotel into a wartime hospital during WWI. The 1920s marked a period of renewed glamour for the Ritz, solidifying its status as a beloved destination for Parisian high society.

In a historic first, the Ritz Paris closed its doors from 2012 to 2016 for an extensive renovation led by New York designer Thierry W. Despont. This remarkable restoration harmoniously blended the hotel’s rich heritage with modern luxury, preserving 95% of the original lighting fixtures and incorporating advanced technology without compromising its historic charm. Among the standout features is the monumental retractable glass roof over the Bar Vendôme terrace, transforming the space into a winter garden and allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors year-round. The meticulous attention to detail during the restoration showcased the artistry of master craftsmen, ensuring that every aspect of the hotel exudes sophistication.

The interior design of the Ritz Paris is a masterful representation of French heritage, featuring a harmonious blend of styles including Louis XIV, Regency, Louis XV, Louis XVI, Directoire, Empire, and Art Nouveau. The luxurious furnishings and decor create an ambiance of timeless elegance, with rich woodwork, exquisite marble, intricate moldings, and opulent chandeliers. Renowned French brands like Christofle, Baccarat, and Haviland contribute to the hotel’s sophisticated aesthetic, while sumptuous fabrics like silk and velvet enhance the sensory experience. Floral arrangements throughout the hotel add freshness and vibrancy, creating a serene atmosphere that invites guests to indulge in the beauty of their surroundings.

In September 2023, the Ritz Paris unveiled a redesigned gastronomic restaurant, Espadon, helmed by Chef Eugénie Béziat. Her culinary creations, influenced by African and Mediterranean flavors, showcase innovative dishes such as lobster with manioc and bissap. The restaurant’s intimate setting, adorned with artisanal ceramics and lush greenery, overlooks the Grand Jardin, providing a tranquil dining experience.

The Sunday Grand Brunch in the Salon d’Été features artisanal products and a raw bar, creating a delightful culinary experience for guests. The Ritz Paris has long been a sanctuary for writers, particularly Marcel Proust, who found inspiration within its elegant walls. The iconic Bar Hemingway retains its old-world charm, serving as a gathering place for literary giants like Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Its decor pays homage to its storied past, filled with memorabilia. In 2021, the Ritz Bar was inaugurated, celebrating César Ritz’s pioneering spirit with a circular design and a stunning sculptural lantern. The bar features an evening ritual where guests enjoy cocktails inspired by the Zodiac, merging tradition with innovation. With over a century of history, the Ritz Paris stands as a symbol of French elegance and hospitality. Its commitment to excellence and luxury continues to inspire and delight guests from around the world, ensuring its place as an iconic destination for discerning travelers.
