In a culinary crescendo that has set the food scene ablaze, Nina, the latest gem in the vibrant Dumbo neighborhood, has officially opened its doors, welcoming New Yorkers and tourists alike to indulge in an extraordinary dining and nightlife experience. At the helm of this culinary expedition is Israeli Chef Sagi Azrouel, making his much-anticipated New York restaurant debut after a decade as a private chef to the world’s elite.
Nina, nestled at 56 Adams Street, strategically positioned across from the Brooklyn Flea and mere steps away from the iconic Manhattan Bridge, officially opened on November 30th. Boasting a 162-seat capacity, the restaurant promises an enchanting blend of flavors, styles, and a captivating atmosphere that resonates with the energy of a younger, more globally attuned generation. Chef Sagi Azrouel, born and raised in Ashdod along the Mediterranean coast of Israel, brings a wealth of culinary expertise rooted in his mother’s Moroccan kitchen and the dynamic Israeli chef scene. From a 13-year-old dishwasher in local restaurants to commanding his own kitchen by the age of 18, Chef Azrouel’s culinary journey has been nothing short of extraordinary. His style, he describes, is “simple, unforgettable modern Mediterranean food,” focusing on fresh, seasonal produce, vibrant salads, and impeccably prepared fish and meats – all presented with a keen sense of aesthetics.
“I believe you eat with your eyes and scent first and then, of course, the taste,” remarks Azrouel, whose sharp sense of style transcends not only his presentation but the entire dining experience. “Cooking is my love language, and hosting is in my blood. I believe each person will feel at home.” The menu at Nina is a symphony of colors, simplicity, and healthfulness. Signature dishes include smoked eggplant carpaccio, tahini fish kababs, traditional meat stews, warm challah, and toasted pine nut hummus. With a focus on everyday dining needs, Chef Azrouel ensures Nina is an affordable option for all. Anna Castellani, one of the owners, expresses her excitement about having Chef Azrouel on board, stating, “Chef Azrouel represents the energy and inclusivity of a younger, more worldly generation. His experience as a personal chef also allows him to present a menu that speaks to everyday dining needs.”
The ambiance at Nina is carefully curated, offering pockets of comfortable “little living rooms” for intimate gatherings and group dining. Floor-to-ceiling windows flood the restaurant with daylight, providing an excellent backdrop for people-watching along the cobblestone streets of Dumbo. A custom sound system, flown in from Israel, and a house DJ set the mood with mellow vinyl beats during the day and livelier tunes at night.
Speaking about the vision behind Nina, Castellani, deeply rooted in the Dumbo neighborhood, explains, “I felt, as a Dumbo resident, that there was a need to fill. The neighborhood has changed so much but what hasn’t changed is the need for more real neighborhood places to eat. Nina opens its doors at 5 pm for dinner, transforming into a late-night haven with a smaller menu. The future promises breakfast, lunch, and a vinyl brunch, creating a welcoming space for everyone, from the busy business crowd to young families and the lively nighttime crowd. Nina aims to complement its neighboring restaurants and provide another compelling reason for Dumbo residents and visitors to linger and savor the flavors of this evolving neighborhood.
