AD100 2023 Interior Designers Hall Of Fame | Part I
Since 1999, Alexa Hampton, the daughter of the company’s founder designer, has delicately brought Mark Hampton‘s opulent interiors into the present era. Hampton retains the firm’s long-standing sensibilities: timeless interiors with attention to even the smallest detail. She does this whether she is designing her own family home or a pared-back Hamptons getaway, or elegantly modernizing her father’s work in a New York residence. Including her father, she primarily displays her fashionable panache in formal settings, like an apartment in New York’s The Pierre hotel.
German-born New Yorker Annabelle Selldorf, together with her architecture business of the same name, has single-handedly changed the way the contemporary art world views and values architecture as a key component of its profession. Her designs for galleries such as Hauser & Wirth and David Zwirner have blurred the lines between commercial and cultural, and her museums, such as New York City’s Neue Galerie and the upcoming redesign of the nearby Frick Collection, have demonstrated her ability to reinterpret complex historical spaces.
The doyenne of American conventional décor, Bunny Williams, has maintained her relevance for more than 40 years because of her effect on how the general public views design. Williams makes the customs of rich, patrician design look cozy, livable, and even approachable through her boutiques (including the famous garden shop Treillage she founded with her now-husband, antiques dealer John Rosselli), showrooms, and other profitable books and product lines.
Daniel Romualdez designs homes, offices, and commercial spaces for stylish clients from the upper classes of American society, including Aerin Lauder, Tory Burch, and Lauren Santo Domingo (he frequently works in places where style clichés abound, like the Hamptons or Nantucket). Before starting his practice in 1993, Romualdez, a New Yorker who was raised in Manila, received his training from Hall of Fame members Thierry Despont and Robert A.M. Stern.
Diller Scofidio + Renfro, an architecture firm founded in 1981 by Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, is one of the few in the twenty-first century to have had such a significant impact on how the general public sees art and culture. It’s difficult to picture Manhattan without many of the firm’s masterpieces, including MoMA, Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, and especially The High Line. The quartet made a significant effect on their hometown of New York after Charles Renfro and Benjamin Gilmartin joined the team. The way that design may contribute to conceptualizing post-industrial urban areas was changed by this former elevated train track turned art-filled public park.
Frank Gehry, a rare household name in modern architecture, has methodically built a career that is almost wholly unique. He was born and raised in Canada before moving to America, where he established his studio, now known as Gehry Partners, in the 1960s. Some of the most recognizable buildings of the past fifty years include the Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, the Stata Center at MIT, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Spain, all of which are examples of his legendary architectural style that blurs the lines between sculpture and functionality.
Jamie Drake started his own design company in 1978, three days after earning his degree from Parsons School of Design, and soon received orders to furnish two different Fifth Avenue apartments. Since then, the AD100 interior designer, located in New York, has argued persuasively for glamour in his primarily urban portfolio of residential projects. Drake’s interiors quickly became recognizable for their powerful pops of color at a time when neutral midcentury-modern decor was becoming more popular. This attracted a star-studded clientele, including former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, whom Drake assisted in renovating Manhattan’s iconic Gracie Mansion.
Interior designer Juan Pablo Molyneux, who was born in Chile and currently has offices in New York and Paris, is regarded as the pinnacle of traditional design. What other way to sum up his beautifully portrayed creations, such as his own Parisian home or a sophisticated Pebble Beach estate? However, every component of a Molyneux design is executed with the level of skill required to bravely mix and match eras, color schemes, and materials for his clients, who include royalty, professional athletes like Cristiano Ronaldo, and heavy hitters in Palm Beach. Bold, checkered marble floors are a recurring flourish in his work. The AD100 designer is admired by clients for having what they refer to as “perfect taste.”
The many sparkling, white-box modern rooms that Lee F. Mindel of the New York firm SheltonMindel creates are comfortable and habitable in a way that others can only imagine. Mindel received his architectural training from Harvard. In addition to his interior designs, his firm’s residences, workplaces, and other freestanding architectural projects have a distinctive sense of scale and proportion that effortlessly combines components from classic and modern styles, with a focus on natural light. His preference for whimsical shapes that draw on his extensive understanding of design history is another Mindel trademark.
Designer and philanthropist Mica Ertegun, who was born in Romania and now resides in New York, is well-versed in the needs of her exclusive clientele, many of whom she cultivated through her intertwined public life with her late husband, Ahmet Ertegun, a co-founder of Atlantic Records. Her preferred color palette is a sophisticated one of subdued hues and opulent materials that is never garish or ostentatious.
Michael S. Smith has attained the pinnacle of the interior design industry because of his keen awareness of the requirements of the American cultural and political establishment. He is best known for renovating the White House in 2010 while the Obama administration was in office (along with the American ambassador’s residence in Madrid while his husband, James Costos, was serving as U.S. ambassador to Spain). This is in addition to his projects for clients like Cindy Crawford, Steven Spielberg, and Rupert Murdoch.
Peter Marino is one of the few architects who has had a significant impact on the intertwined worlds of fashion, luxury, and interior design. His office has grown to be a significant pillar of the worldwide design business through an unlimited number of domestic interiors, hotels, retail flagships, and exhibitions.
Robert A.M. Stern has played a significant role in American architecture for more than 50 years as both an educator and an architect. Before starting his own business in 1977, he worked as the Architectural League of New York’s curator.
Stephen Sills‘ interiors are a sophisticated version of modern luxury, contextualized to suit specific locales and homeowners. They are serene and flawlessly designed. He draws inspiration from structures like the Taj Mahal and Monticello to create timeless homes with a restrained grandeur that are adorned with opulent surfaces, sculptural furnishings, and unique objects. Stephen Sills’s work includes remodeling the Chevalier Restaurant, two residences in the Baccarat Hotel in New York City, as well as beach houses in Naples, Florida, and Southampton, New York.
Thierry Despont is an architect, artist, and interior designer located in New York City who received his education at Harvard University and the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Considering his many successes, he keeps a remarkably low profile.
Toshiko Mori‘s decades-long career in projects both public and private, big and small, demonstrates the importance she focuses on creativity and a feeling of location in her architecture business. Mori, a Japanese native from Kobe, studied design at the Cooper Union in New York before becoming a renowned architect and a renowned academic. Toshiko Mori, who had previously served as the architecture department chair at Harvard University’s Graduate School of Design, became the school’s first tenured female professor in 1995.
For more than 20 years, William Sofield‘s residential, hotel, and commercial spaces have aided in defining modern luxury with their restrained, mature, and smoldering, masculine edge. Sofield, a native of New Jersey, attended Princeton before beginning his career as a Ralph Lauren employee. He founded Aero Studios with Thomas O’Brien in the early 1990s, then in 1996 he founded his own business, Studio Sofield. Since then, he has taken care of wealthy clientele like Tom Ford and Joel Silver, as well as businesses like Coach, YSL, and Harry Winston, as well as the prestigious Soho Grand Hotel.
