Is fair to say Ginza Onodera is one of the best experience we’ve had, and that you’ll have. The signature dish is the turbot. It’s flown from Japan, prepared usuzukuristyle in thin slices and kobujime-marinaded between layers of kombu (kelp). This is Japanese food for the rarefied top floors of the international market, with franchises in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Paris and Hawaii. CovetED went to the London restaurant and had a blast in one of the best gastronomic experiences. Keep reading to understand why.
Ambience
Ginza Onodera seems to be the perfect place to have your first Japanese cuisine experience. “Ginza Onodera offers an authentic and exclusive Japanese dining experience right in the heart of St James’s, London.” This is the expression you’ll find at the restaurant’s website that better describes the concept. But we have more to say.
Onodera Chef
After stepping into a stylish bar with industrial coolers displaying the wines and sake, we headed downstairs where the dining area is located. The design is modern and sleek, with marble counters, slate walls, low-hanging lamps and an uncanny spectacularism.

We had six different kinds of dishes that felt like heaven. Between sashimi, prawn and assorted vegetable tempura, Wagyu beef and some other plates, we are not able to choose a favourite one. But we certainly have to highlight the Wagyu beef, that was perfectly buttery and tender, served with a selection of sauces and pickled vegetables and delicious wasabi sauce.
Overall, the dining experience at Ginza Onodera was unique. The food was traditional Japanese with a modern twist and was of the highest quality. The sleek, modern decor complemented the traditional but contemporary menu perfectly and the staff was attentive and efficient. The atmosphere was relaxed and peaceful and is the perfect ambience needed after the stresses and strains of the day.
