What is Light Design?

Once understood, light design is simpler than you might think. It has nothing to do with designing lamps or chandeliers, but everything to do with the disposition of the light source in your home.

This technique is not only left for decorators to explore but also for the architects, who are responsible for the natural sources of light in anything home or building that they create.

The combination of all light sources in a house – light layering – culminates into what’s called light design.

Are you ready to start mastering this skill and completely recreate the light sources in your bedroom? – Keep on reading below!

Layering Light

When it comes to light design in the bedroom – or anywhere else in your home for that matter – the key is layering it. This will ensure that you find the right balance between all the different elements that you should consider when designing it; ambient lighting, task lighting, or accent lighting. This will also ensure that you have light sources for all of your needs and moods.

So where should you start? Firstly, you need to have a plan for all the things you intend on doing in your bedroom. Do you want a tv in the bedroom, will you have a reading section, desk, or do you prefer reading on the bed directly? Are you going to include a vanity table?

Yes, too many questions to answer, but you need to start somewhere! You can begin by defining your light source foundation with ambient lighting, or general lighting. Good ambient light includes natural light that comes from windows or skylights, or alternatively, artificial light that provides a decent amount of lighting that you can use to perform general tasks such as; cleaning, folding clothes, or making the bed.

Ambient Lighting

If you decide on ambient lighting that comes from an artificial source; this is best achieved through either ceiling fixtures – flush mount ceiling lights, chandeliers, pendant lights, etc – or, through portable light sources such as floor lamps.

To help you choose, please consider that both lighting types will offer a sufficient amount of brightness for activities that don’t require direct, focused light.

Task Lighting

Task lighting is meant for anything that requires a higher level of focus, including; reading, working or even applying makeup! For this type of bedroom need, the best option is to layer on top of your general light source. This can be fulfilled by – bedside table lamps, low hanging pendants on either side of the bed, sconces, wall mounted task lights on either side of a headboard or other directional light placed above it.

In the end, the rules for this type of light source in the bedroom are simple – you can place it or create it in any form you like best as long as it offers ample lighting needed for sustained concentration. The rest depends solely on your creativity, and style preference

Accent Lighting

Accent lighting, as the name suggests, is the type of light source that you use to highlight elements or certain parts in your bedroom. This could be anything from artwork, a special furniture piece, or a separate part of the bedroom that you would like to emphasise more as, accent lighting on its own, can act as a subdued version of ambient lighting

In the end, this type of light source can provide the bedroom with a cosier atmosphere that gives off an almost fire like, glow. – The use of recessed lighting in the bedroom, wall sconces, tape lights or creative repurposing of other fixtures are only a few ways to incorporate this type of lighting in your bedroom’s light structure.

Final Touches: Dimmers, Brightness & Colour

Once your light design structure is clear you only need to refine the smaller details such as dimmers, the brightness and the colour of your light sources.

Why are all these last elements important? They allow you to perfect the atmosphere and also provide more visual comfort. Dimmers, for example, are important as they help you get into a more relaxed mood during nighttime. If you only have one bright light source, it’s hard to transition into a relaxed sleep-mode, and dimmers can help you ease into sleep more gradually. – In short, they are multifunctional as they allow you to go from low lighting levels to full brightness, as a way of accommodating all of your different bedroom needs.

When it comes to brightness the important thing to keep in mind is the type of bulb you are using for each fixture. Depending on the bulb’s lighting intensity and the colour it emits, it has the potential to positively or negatively affect the way you function during and after a given activity.

In terms of colour, there are several that you can choose from for your bedroom; soft white glow, blue, and gamut (which can be sourced in LEDs). The white and blue colours increase alertness and are, therefore, best used for task lighting porpuses. On the other hand, these tones can suppress the production of melatonin – the hormones that induce sleep – making them a wrong choice for late at night when all you want to do is relax and get into the mood of sleep.
