In this article, we will be talking about the street lights of Guddevol by Ingo Maurer. These are composed of large rounded lighting objects which hover the Place des Hauts-Fourneaux, a small intimate public space in Luxembourg. Let’s take a closer look at this brilliant design.

Standing as the first street lights, Guddevol is characterised by large disks of approximately 420 cm in diameter with an opening at the center. Each is kept above ground at a slight angle supported by three slender and mat black poles that reach heights of approximately five metres.

On the upper side, several curved openings of various measurements are equipped with recessed LEDs, with a circle of LED uplights fixed around each pole. They illuminate the surface of the disks, turning the slices into bright white circles that contrast the dark structures of the furnaces above them.

Guddevol stands for have a good flight in Luxembourgish, a fitting title as one could say that its disks resemble the appearance of a UFO. Nevertheless, this luminous piece was vigorously designed in order to provide lighting to the right places.

It creates a sense of togetherness as it attracts a lot of people, the obscure part gives life to the imagination of many whereas the brighter space represents a place of amusement. This lighting masterpiece was first introduced in 2014 and now more are expected to be installed in the foreseeable future.
