Top Design Projects: The Timeless and Intense Decor of a Venetian Home ⇒ Today, CovetED will delve into the decorations of one of the most intense and timeless Venetian homes in Italy. This stunning design project was styled by Romi Loch Davis, a South African-born interior stylist and fashion designer. This project is situated in the North Western part of Venice. Quite recently, the apartment underwent renovations, under the management of Venetian architect, Barbara Pastor. The renovation consisted of reshaping the service area, eliminating walls and doors to create a freer flowing space, without damaging or removing any historic features, and several other aspects. This astonishing home is a combination of timeless decoration and intense colours.

This environment was created with sculptures and lighting features and a layering of objects from all over the world from different epochs and cultures: from the lacquered 19 th century chinese table to the ceiling lamp Macchina della Luce (lighting machine) in aluminium and gold leaf by Cattelani & Smith, the console table where bronze and terra-cotta archaeological objects are scattered to the contemporary “pouf “ Beetle made of glowing lacquered resin by Imperfettolab (Milan Galeria Dilmos), to the antique sanctuary lamp suspended next to the gilded mobile by the artist Manuela Paul Cavallier.
Romi feels that there are “resonances “between all these unique and diverse objects that create a dialogue and the harmony that emanates from the combination of them and thereby express her idea if eclectic beauty.

Sumptuous in a modern way and full of character, the house bears witness to a passion for fabrics Cushions, curtains and sofa throws are made, for example, of rare Spanish brocade and embellished with inlay work, applications and sculpted fabric details. These are all conceived of and made by Atelier Romi Romi Loch Davis as are the organza and taffetta screen like curtains with hand made tulle “galaxies“.
With particular attention to the quality and exclusivity of fabrics and attention to detail Romi creates particular garments : tunics in mixtures of Indian saris, draped skirts, satin and lace bustier tops, velvet jackets, winter coats of Russian inspiration in heavy brocades. The house is rather like a theatre stage upon which Romi’s universe is shown. She herself says the house is an extension of her very being.
The salone is rather like the parterre of an opera house with vast brocade curtains that run along a curved rail and open the apartment onto the city or turn it in towards itself. The salone is separated from the kitchen area by a glass and gold leaf sliding door made by the Atelier Ulgador in France. Awestruck by the “maestria“ of Venetian artisans and their technical prowess Romi and Barbara Pastor delighted in working with several Venetian “officine“ (workshops): Spazio Legno for the kitchen, Orsoni for the Venetian Terrazzo floor mosaics, Officina fabbrile Bertoldini & Torre (Metalworker) for the decorated iron doors and sculptural handles. The refined and intimate kitchen was custom made of larch wood which was burnt black, brushed and oiled. The gold leaf and glass splash backs and green marble stand out against this coal black background.
