Best Design Projects: The One 57 High-Rise Building by Drake/Anderson ⇒ One of New York’s top interior design practices, Drake/Anderson, among whose high-profile customers are Michael Bloomberg and Madonna, was asked to design the fourteenth tallest structure in the US. If to be precise, at 1,004 feet the designers were responsible for a private client’s full-floor residence in the skyscrapers upper reaches. Now, CovetED will revisit this massive model apartment that is simply stunning to look at and we regarded as one of the best design projects of this decade.

The building One 57 seemed to be in the planning stages for more than 15 years. Pritzker Architectural Prize winner Christian de Portzamparc was the architect of this New York condo. Despite the critics’ point of view, Jamie Drake is fond of the apartment and calls One 57 “a great, iconic, very ‘New York, New York, It’s a Wonderful Town’ building for our time.”

What is more, the designer considers the 90-story residential tower’s luxurious model apartment to be one of his most favourable projects. As a spectacular estate with a dynamic structure, this impressive building is located in the heart of NY. It is centred on the south side of Central Park and the extraordinary views open just in front of it.

The owners wanted the fabulous space to become a showstopper. At the same time, the apartment needed to have understated quality. The clients wanted something that would appeal to a broad array of prospective buyers with the desire for the same quality and international sophistication. Willing to keep Drake’s astral-inspired model apartment gender neutral, they weren’t afraid of colour, but they didn’t want to be inundated by it, either.

Drake/Anderson designed One 57’s model apartment with lots of low horizontals in the main spaces, so that the stunning views of the city were not blocked. It has something feminine, soft, but tailored. “Naturally, the design is all about the views,” Drake adds. “I tried to set the tone in the foyer with the idea of a glittering sky, a unique celestial occurrence. I was thinking of meteor showers and planets, which is why there are so many round shapes in the entry.”

Everything that is oriented north and south flows out of the window. Furthermore, the furnishings are arranged in groups for intimate conversations or for parties. Due to the asymmetrical layout, the dining table is not central in the dining room and is balanced with a great piano. Some of the bedrooms were given a different effect. In a master bedroom and a guest one, plenty of vertical elements were used to make the statement of height and create the feeling of a soaring ceiling.

There are circular lamps throughout the apartment reminiscent of a solar system of the planets. As a matter of fact, the cosmic theme drifts throughout the flat, particularly in the high-sheen silk, satin and velvet fabrics, lacquered woods, lunar-hued marble, and metallic accents.

The paint in the living room has a top coat that contains white Japanese mica. Moreover, in one guest room, the celestial paint colour gets a cosmetic helping hand with the addition of eyeshadow. The bathroom and kitchen are also spectacular, as the luxurious material and attention to details is sensational in these areas. In terms of amenities, the building features all the services of a magnificent apartment: fabulous restaurant, incredible spa, an enormous pool with underwater sound, and much more.

All in all, One 57 appears to be a paradise in the heart of a big city with spectacular views and spacious rooms. There is no doubt in stating that the dynamic duo completely exceeded themselves and created a masterpiece in New York City.
