Albania’s New National Theatre Will Be Designed by Bjarke Ingels Group ⇒ The renowned architecture firm, Bjarke Ingles Group, otherwise known as BIG, has been commissioned to design the new National Theatre of Tirana, Albania. With a bow-tie-shape, the massive building will feature three new indoor performance spaces, a rooftop amphitheatre as well as a covered public space. It will be located right next to the Skanderbeg Square, the National Opera and the National Art gallery, so it will become perfect for all art and theatre lovers to gather and celebrate these sectors.

This exceptional 9,300 square meter project will be developed with the assistance of Theatre Projects and SON-Group. Essentially, the main purpose of its build is to offer a wide variety of urban spaces for individuals to gather, especially in areas which they lack. The theatre will feature a prism-shaped volume that is both compressed and lifted at its centre. This will allow the creation of connections and public plazas on both sides of the structure where visitors can enter or they can also benefit from spontaneous performances that will be happening right beneath the lifted structure.
“Our design for the new national theatre of Albania will continue the city’s efforts for making Tirana’s public spaces more inviting and its public institutions more transparent,’ disclosed Bjarke Ingels, the founder and creative partner of BIG. “the theater is conceived as two buildings connected by the main auditorium: one for the audience and one for the performers. underneath, the theater arches up from the ground creating an entrance canopy for the audience as well as for the performers, while opening a gateway to the new urban arcade beyond. above, the roof mirrors the archway, forming an open-air amphitheater with a backdrop to the city’s skyline,” added Ingles.

Upon entering, visitors will be bestowed by a ticketing area which is flanked by two staircases that give access to the theatre foyer. Here, they will find a couple of options as they can either navigate towards the main auditorium or visit the smaller “black box” performance venues.
“The two main facades of the national theatre of Albania are opened up to expose the spaces inside the building out to the public,’ explained the founder of the firm, “one side reveals the foyer, lounge, bar and restaurant as well as the two experimental stages to the passers-by, like rooms in a doll house. the other side reveals the entire section of the backstage, side stages, under stage and fly tower, exposing the entire theater machine to the curious observers. where a theater typically wouldn’t be open to the public until the early evening, the new Albanian national stage will become a spectacle of production as well as performance throughout the day,’ concluded Bjarke Ingels
