The prestigious RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) has launched a brand-new architecture award: the RIBA International Prize. The list of all six finalists consists of high-profile projects worldwide that RIBA recognize as an example of the best in terms of modern public architecture.
The six finalists were chosen from a total of 30 architectural projects from all five continents. RIBA’s judges had travelled to visit each shortlisted building in person and they will announce the winner on November 24.
The juri committee is composed by Richard Rogers of Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners, Billie Tsien of Tod Williams Billie Tsien Architects I Partners, Kunlé Adeyemi of NLÉ, Philip Gumuchdjian of Gumuchdjian Architects, and Marilyn Jordan Taylor, the former rector and Paley professor at the University of Pennsylvania – School of Design.

The Heydar Aliyev Center in Baku, Azerbaijan
The design of Zaha Hadid Architects celebrates the Zerbaijan’s independence as well as its first president Heydar Aliyev. The vaulted performance venue includes white cladding and paving , as well as the innovation through the use of oak. Zaha Hadid is known worldwide by her futuristique and innovative design
The Museo Jumex in Mexico City, Mexico
David Chipperfield Architects provided the public space with three levels of art galleries that each of them include unique touches and styles. The last floor opens out to introduce the largest private art collection in Latin America, composed of over 2000 artworks by contemporary artists such as Jeff Koons, Olafur Eliasson and Tacita Deanof.
The Stormen Concert Hall in Bodø, Norway
This building was designed by DRDH Architects. The Concert Hall is composed of three music venues compactly placed from east to west across the area. While thhe Main Hall provides a new typology that combines the visual and acoustic qualities necessary for a concert hall, along with the technical features and the characteristic performance of a theatre.
The Arquipélago Centre for Contemporary Arts in Azores, Portugal
The restoration of the historic structure, which dates back to the 1890s, by Menos é Mais was inspired by the history of the building itself, and it features a distinctive black basalt exterior, which has an industrial character. The Arquipélago is a multidisciplinary center committed to promote contemporary visual arts, performing arts and architecture through the organization temporary exhibitions, residential courses, workshops, conferences, concerts and special events.
The Ring of Remembrance in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire, France.
The elliptical war memorial at Notre Dame de Lorette, embossed with the 580,000 names of the men who died in France during the First World War, in Ablain-Saint-Nazaire. Located on the Hill of Lorette, the Agence d’architecture Philippe Prost (ADPP) designed this structure with roots on one end while cantilevering out as the land falls away to represent the fragile nature of peace.
The Universidad de Ingeniería y Tecnología in Lima, Peru
Grafton Architects and Shell Arquitectos worked together in order to create a new facility for the 50-year-old engineering university of technology and engineering. The design expresses the positive future of the nation of Peru with a vertical design, including open ended spaces of circulation and suspended platforms. According to Grafton, “These contrasting conditions allowed us to invent a new “cliff” which would act as a type of screen towards the motorway. The cliff would also be legible from the motorways and express the new vertical campus to the city.”
