Portugal longs for a 3-star recognition that still wasn’t fulfilled. From the North to the South and Islands, Portugal is full of exquisite cuisine that longs to be experienced. Here is the full list of all 26 restaurants granted the coveted star!

2-Michelin Stars

Alma – Lisbon

Alma is located in Chiado, at the heart of Lisbon, and is the only Portuguese restaurant that was upgraded to a 2-Michelin star status. Chef Henrique Sá Pessoa defines his cooking with just one word: flavour. At the base of his philosophy is a combination of several influences, from Portuguese traditional cuisine to his travelling all around the world and his passion for Asia.

 

Belcanto – Lisbon

Awarded with two stars of the Michelin guide, Belcanto first opened its doors in 1958 in Chiado. Its privileged location in Lisbon’s historic centre, the discreet service and its refined cuisine, quickly conquered the elites of the Portuguese capital. Belcanto, by the hand of chef José Avillez, re-opened in 2012, with a completely new face. In that same year, the restaurant was awarded a star of the Michelin guide and, in 2014, gained its second one, being the first restaurant in Lisbon with this incredibly high distinction.

 

Il Gallo d’Oro – Funchal

Since 2004 that the kitchen is under the meticulous care of the talented French Chef Benoît Sinthon. Back in 2009, Il Gallo d’Oro received its first Michelin star, curiously being also the first one awarded on the island of Madeira, a reward that it sees renewed consecutively until 2017, the year in which it is distinguished with two Michelin stars, which maintains for 2019.

William – Funchal

The recently renovated William restaurant of the historic Belmond Reid’s Palace hotel in Funchal has since 2015 Joachim Koerper as a consultant chef. The renowned chef, who already has a Michelin-starred restaurant in Lisbon, Eleven, gets one more distinction for the Country – it is the second restaurant in Madeira to enter the Guide. Luís Pestana is the executive chef of the restaurant and has worked for William for more than 25 years.
