1. What do you love the most about what your work?
Kat: I love to create safe and beautiful places. Nowadays people search for work-life-balance so home is a very personal area where you rest and charge your batteries. Creating this kind of space with great people makes me happy. When it comes to commercial projects, I love working on creative and conceptual ideas.
Kate: Each client is different, which makes projects always interesting and very individual. I love to design the space where people feel comfortable, energetic and just happy. Home is the place where you want to come back, relax and live your life, be yourself- not to pretend anyone and the great design should reflect those feelings.
2.What was the most challenging time in your career, and how did you overcome it?
Kat: The most challenging time was definitely the beginning when you have to get to know all the details of business and market and of course find your first clients. We both have worked for design- and building companies but to create your own brand – it’s a challenge!
Kate: The design process requires many elements to be consistent and complement each other, not only in terms of aesthetics but also time-wise, which is often a challenge.
3.Have you achieved everything you want in life? – What dreams are you still lingering on to?
Kat: There is still so much to dream of! I’m a traveller, we both are, and love to discover new cultures, meet new people, eat new dishes. We both try to be very openminded, and you can see it in our design. That’s also the goal, to work on projects for a couple of months or weeks in other countries, even on different continents. I also would like to be involved with conceptional projects.
Kate: – A dream doesn’t become reality through magic, it takes sweat, determination, and hard work. We of course dream big, we have our goals, not only connected to the company and the projects but also we want to fulfil ourselves on a personal level. Combining those two elements would make us the most satisfied.
4.What makes you feel fulfilled professionally?
Kat: There is this incredible feeling just after finishing an outstanding project. Your client loves it and you love it. Then you feel like you would manage to get on the top of Mont Black. But there is still Mount Everest to ascend.
Kate: For us, the most important is when the client is delighted and pleased with the project, where you can see real happy faces and after the project is complete – you become a friend with the client.
5. How would you describe your relationship with your audience? Do you have a special way of communicating/advertising your work?
Kat and Kate: We both speak a couple of languages and lived in different countries before settling down in Berlin, so there are no language or cultural barriers with our clients. It’s really a pleasure to work with our clients, with most of them we meet for a coffee from time to time when the project is finished. And this is our way of advertising: a well-done job. When your client is happy, the next one will knock on your door.
6. Are you working on anything new at the moment? What’s the inspiration behind what you working on at the moment?
.
Kat: We just got a new residential client, but haven’t seen the house yet. It’s a penthouse in Berlin. There are also side projects, as part of a bigger team: healthy bar or rental apartments. The inspiration can be everywhere: clients’ belongings, photos, art, window view from the new apartment.
Kate: You take inspiration literally from everywhere, from the walk to the park – where you admire autumn leaves or visit the museum – where you adore colours on the painting. You bring that inspiration to the client, you share with them new trends and ideas – and together you create a space of their dreams.
7. Are all of your products designed by you? If you collaborate with another brand do you usually have your name on it?
Kat: If there is a need or wish, we design products ourselves, which we like to do a lot! But since there are so many beautiful things on the market we work together with different brands. It would be too many to count. But it’s not a secret among designers that we like Italian furniture brands. In Berlin, we work together with this little store, with thousands of great quality and unique wallpapers, mostly french, and good wall paints. Our carpentry and glass artists come from Poland.
Kate: We collaborate with many companies, for example for joinery we tend to use only polish companies, marble usually come from Italy or Poland. Although we have our shops, people that we work often, we always open to new collaborations, as each project is different and requires a new way of sourcing.
8. What would you say is the trend at the moment in the design world – creatively speaking?
Kat: There is a post-postmodern “everything” trend. Everything is allowed and all depends on customers’ needs. But in my opinion, the most wished design is comfortable furniture, bright colours, wood, natural plants, homely feeling. Rough and industrial are over. But we have to take into account the trends that differ from country to country and even sometimes from city to city.
Kate: Nowadays there is no “one trend” in the design world. Everything depending on the project, specification, taste of clients and of course personal choice of designer. There are of course some interior design trends, but we are trying not to follow them in order to create a timeless design and not the design that you can copy and paste easily from one project to another, only because it is trendy.
9. How would you describe your client type? What do they do, what do they like, what projects are they involved in?
Kat and Kate: We are based in Berlin, but from time to time we work internationally. Our clients are mostly foreigners, people who are new in town and don’t want to spend years designing their own home, without knowing the local language or the supplier market. Also, there are clients who would like to do a renovation or move to a new apartment but they don’t know where to start or just simply have no time, as they are working professionals. Then we come into the game. We work closely with our clients, we help them understand how space works, what is important and how to achieve their desired look. During the designing process, they discover their own creativity, sometimes they also come up with ideas, which we always try to take into consideration. In the end – we create a space for them, not for us!
10.When it comes to craftsmanship; who do you think is leading the way?
Kat: It’s hard to answer, cause in every part of the world there is a different need and lead. In Europe the craftsmanship of the confectionery is reborn. But coming back to interior design, from our experience I can say the carpentry is definitely very stable on the market.
Kate: craftsmanship is nowadays something that is totally reborn, but there are still many specialists that are missing on the market. That situation makes our life more difficult, as often the lead time is very long. However, the unique piece of furniture or the glass makes the space very different and it is totally worth, price-wise and time-wise to use craftmanship products.
11. What do you think will be the focus of the design world in the future? – Any particular changes that you would like to see happening?
Kat: Homes/ apartments in cities are going to be rather small and functional. Changes which I would like to see: environmental clever and friendly cities, recycled fabrics and materials – those are already happening. I wish people would go for quality pieces, appreciate craftsmanship instead of mass production.
Kate: It will be definitely sustainable materials and smart home solutions. Craftsmanship is one thing, but the technology and environmentally friendly materials in our places- would lead the way.
