In the opening session, temperature rise with Edward Snowden, the computer scientist who exposed massive US cyber-surveillance. Huawei’s chairman froze the room and Portuguese Daniela Braga showed what fibre Portuguese technology is made of. On the second day, the agenda promised to be filled with names like Michel Barnier, European Union negotiator for Brexit, Ronaldinho, former footballer and ambassador Teqball and Katherine Maher, CEO of Wikipedia! CovetED brings you all the best moments and highlights from the first two days of the Web Summit 2019, the event taking place in Parque das Nações, in Lisbon until Thursday.
FIRST DAY
It was on two giant screens and a dark background behind that Edward Snowden, live while exiled in Russia, addressed the thousands watching the Web Summit kick-off at the Altice Arena. It was the big headliner – one of those who make fans rush to the box office in December to sell out daily festival passes that only happen in July next year. Edward Snowden had everything to make the Web Summit scorch at Monday’s opening session.
DefinedCrowd founder and CEO was on stage with Michelle Zatlyn, co-founder and chief operating officer of Cloudflare and host Filomena Cautela. Daniela Braga was a double pride on stage: “First, because I’m Portuguese,” he said. The rest we add: because it’s a tech woman who can employ “41% women” at a startup who has already caught the attention of media like Forbes. “I come from a world of engineers, I’m always the only woman in the room since I’m 22 years old. My company has 41% women and we are not doing it on purpose. ”

SECOND DAY
From Donald Trump’s possible reelection to the consequences of leaving the UK from the European Union and accusing Mark Zuckerberg, the second day of the Web Summit was also marked by Carlos Moedas’ latest technology summit as European Commissioner.
Michel Barnier was a figurehead on the second day of the Web Summit. On the main stage, the EU chief negotiator for Brexit argued that Brussels will demand guarantees for a post-Brexit level playing field, referring to future economic relations between the two parties. “The time will be extremely short for negotiations,” said Barnier, on the main stage of the Web Summit in Lisbon. With an audience composed of one of the most anticipated speakers of the day, he added, “The EU will demand strong guarantees for a level playing field. The UK should not think of zero tariffs. ” Michel Barnier said on the Web Summit’s central stage that he still does not realize what the UK will gain from the exit. “Nobody has explained the advantages of Brexit to me yet,” he said, adding, to the delight of those listening, “Not even Nigel Farage.”
The highlight was for well-known sports figures, but also for the big themes that mark the present, such as Brexit.
