The European Design Awards 2017, otherwise known as the ED-Awards occurred from May 23rd to 28th, in the Rivoli Theatre in Oporto, Portugal. In an effort to celebrate creative excellence, the annual event is comprised of a jury that includes publishers, journalists, editors and academics who evaluate and acknowledge the outstanding work in the communication design field by European designers.

This event comes as an extraordinary opportunity for designers to make their work more visible to a wider audience. Following the coronation of the winners, the European Design Awards wraps up with a festival. Today’s article will be exclusive about the recipients of the three special prizes, the Jury’s Prizes, Agency of the Year and Best of Show.
Jury’s Prize: Like a Pearl in My Hand by Studio Rob Van Hoesel
“In Like a Pearl in my Hand, Carina Hesper reveals a side of China that is mostly hidden from the outside world. Many parents in China give up their new-born child when they find out that it is visually impaired … Like a Pearl in my Hand is a multi-sensory experience encouraging social awareness. It is presented as a limited and signed edition box with 32 prints, all fully coated in black thermochromatic ink.”
Agency of the Year – SILO (Netherlands)
“We are a human-centered design agency with ideas. We combine design, UX and branding expertise to help clients think beyond the expected and innovate their businesses. Our goal is to enhance the human experience through design. We create for branding, digital and spatial environments.”
Best of Show: Wales Nation Brand – CYMRU WALES SANS by SMÖRGÅSBORD
“To create a unique family of fonts representing Wales in an authentic and creative way and nodding to Wales’ history within the context of Britain and the world. To incorporate a series of glyphs allowing designers to bring in as much sense of place and character as required.”

As a total, the awards consist of 35 categories placed in seven groups, covering branding covering branding, packaging, exhibition design, typography, digital design, illustration and self-promotion.
