Recalling the Magnificent Set Design of the Oscars 2019 ⇒ On Sunday, the 91st Academy Awards took place at the Dolby Theatre and reunited some of the world’s most skilled creators of cinema. One aspect that blew everyone’s mind was undoubtedly the set design of the ceremony. This year, the stage was completed with an intricate Swarovski crystal installation that was designed as a symbol of “inclusivity” and also include 40,000 real roses. Today, CovetED will explore a bit more this massive production that was home to one of the most special nights in the industry.

“There’s a lot of rectilinear and rigid thinking and there’s a lot of ups and downs, and I wanted to make something that was a distinct statement about inclusion. There’s almost not a [single] straight line onstage and [in] the entire design.” – David Korins (designer and creative director)

Korins imagined four designs for this year’s Oscar, including “Crystal Cloud”, a 1,600-pound cloud-shaped installation, made up of thousands of hand-strung beads, the “Crystal Swag” highlights an architectural shape and it’s a three-story-high, 54-foot-wide ribbon-like formation that twists and spirals taking almost the appearance of a rain curtain flipped on its head and two “Crystal Presenter Backings” which were positioned right behind the presenters.

The Oscar’s installation had an extremely soft, beautiful and asymmetrical portal that embrace all the audience. This choice was made in order to further point out the notion of inclusion, as Korins discloses, “it’s a statement about community in the room and then also reaching out through the camera with the different kinds of immersive angles.”
Swarovski and the Academy Awards have collaborated a number of times, including last year. Korins wanted something organic and natural but also iconic and elegant, and what better than Swarovski crystals to achieve such feat. The roses then introduced to add a warmer touch and texture. In the end, this installation is not just about aesthetics but makes the audience think beyond what’s in front of them in a more social aspect.
