According to Vincent Gregoire, the idea behind the name Excuse my french is that “people all over the world have lost their bearings because of globalisation and need to find themselves again. French people are no longer sure about their identity, but at the same time, they are proud that they are still surprising and intriguing (and world champions). Excuse my French! aims to analyse these positive points and try to identify what makes us different.”
In regards to the “French Paradox”, many often associate France with luxury and traditional know-how, however, nowadays, foreigners evoke the typical Parisian woman, they talk about a certain “je ne sais quoi”, the “French Paradox” or effortlessly chic”. These paradoxes become quite evident in the design industry as well. There is a “new wave” that imagines hybrid creations, integrates new points of view and which is nourished by new expressions.
Vincent Grégoire explained that are four variants when it comes to this theme: Classic with a Twist, Nouvelle Range, Petites Maisons and French Tech, all of which have come to revolutionise the French Identity and design.
For example, “Classic with a twist” is all about adding a new perspective to something that may perhaps feel dated, such as names like Simone, Brigitte or Colette that now have somehow become quite fashionable. There’s also a new trend in the form of preciousness where luxury is a mix of humour and glamour (glumour) that always has an almost seductive connotion to it. As a whole, The idea is to get back in touch with these transgressive qualities.
The Nouvelle range is a new generation that comes from all types of cultures, a great example of such is the renowned designer, India Mahdavi, who was born in Iran and is now based in Paris, has gained worldwide recognition for her peculiar use of colour and shapes. This new movement also leads the way to new collaborations and discoveries. Petites Maison is all about exclusivity and offering a personalised service. Its a selective segment that is always connected to craftsmanship. Lastly, French Tech is the result of how many French high-tech entrepreneurs have become successful for their creations all around the world, take, for instance, the astronaut Thomas Pesquet or designer Mathieu Lahanneur.
These topics were further explained by a highly curated exhibited in the Trend Forum. Featuring a theatrical decor, inspired by the Hall of Mirrors at Versailles but with a little impertinence à la française, visitors were able to fully emerge in the essence of this new French scene. The classical space was brimming with contemporary items. Below you can find some of the best moments from this exhibit.
