Rome Apartment

Nina Campbell’s ability to imbue a room with a sense of place is beautifully demonstrated in this apartment she created for clients in Rome that reflects not just their shared Italian heritage but also the inimitable spirit of that most beautiful of cities. The drawing room is dominated by a magnificent piece by the 18th-century artist, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and a pair of gilded armchairs covered in a luxurious damask that lends the space a distinctly Roman flavour. Throughout the apartment, the classical style of the couple’s collections of art and furniture marries beautifully with the clean lines of simple furniture and strong splashes of colour, notably in the less formal living room that is dominated by a sofa upholstered in burnt orange and a simple side table in red lacquer.

New York Brownstone

As well as an instinctive ability to create homes imbued with a sense of place – and to reflect the tastes of their owners – Nina is also adept at evoking the spirit of a building’s past. The owner of this 19th-century New York brownstone had lived in the building as a student when it was still divided into apartments. Later, he was able to acquire the whole building and restore it, creating a magnificent home that combines the spirit of the 19th century with discreet 21st-century luxury. The transformation of the house included the design and installation of a new staircase that elegantly twists its way up successive floors. The centrepiece of the house is the magnificent drawing room that spans the breadth of the building.

Chelsea Showhouse

However hard an architect tries, some of the most challenging spaces to decorate are show houses that are intended to demonstrate the possibilities of other houses and apartments in the development. Because it’s important that they have a broad appeal, show houses have a tendency to feel a little bland. Understandably, few developers will welcome suggestions of changes to the fabric of a building, so opportunities to create a completely bespoke space are limited. It’s for this reason that Nina decided to focus as much as possible on comfort – both visual and physical.

Manhattan Penthouse

One of the many reasons for Nina Campbell’s success is her extraordinary versatility and capacity to create a distinct sense of place. Whether it is in London, the English countryside or further afield in the Middle East or in Manhattan. This is the apartment of clients for whom she has also designed a breathtaking seaside home in Maine. The contrast between the two couldn’t be greater. Here gleaming finishes and bold use of colour combined to create a glamorous, urban feel that couldn’t be anywhere but in the heart of the city. Bespoke furniture and details such as panelled walls inlaid with brass enhance the glamorous cosmopolitan feel.

Wiltshire Country House

The homes that Nina decorates take their lead from the tastes and interests of their clients, their architectural style – and also their surroundings. This farmhouse in Wiltshire is decorated in a palette inspired by the rolling countryside that surrounds it; a range of greens in varying intensity, rich neutrals and soft sky blues run throughout the house, creating a strong link between inside and out. The drawing room is a seductive mix of formality and comfort, while the kitchen is as beautiful an example of an English country kitchen as you will find, complete with an Aga and wheelback chairs. A small sitting room combines a rich earthy red with a plaid carpet.

London Townhouse

This is the London home of the same Italian family for whom Nina Campbell also designed an apartment in Rome. A comparison of the two demonstrates her extraordinary versatility; while the family’s elegant home in Knightsbridge has all the hallmarks of a London townhouse it also reflects the heritage of its owners with subtle touches such as tasselled pendant lights, collections of Venetian glass, Italian fabrics as well as antique wall hangings. This ability to weave different influences together in order to create a coherent whole is best displayed in the master bedroom where Italian maps and contemporary lighting sit against a backdrop of walls that have been linked with a sumptuous damask weave. Guests are greeted at the front door by Italian strung curtains in Nina’s own velvet that lead to a bar area furnished with a mix of bespoke furniture.
