Interview | Alex Massachi Reveals the Artistry Behind Massachi Industries

February 10, 2024

California, USA – Alex Massachi, the visionary mind behind Massachi Industries, is revolutionizing the property development landscape with a unique blend of design-centric approach and innovative thinking. Specializing in ground-up projects, particularly in high-end luxury multifamily and single-family residences, Massachi Industries stands out for its commitment to functional design and architectural uniqueness.

In a recent interview, Alex Massachi shared insights into his creative process and the ethos driving his projects. “My name is Alex Massachi. My company is Massachi Industries. I’m a ground-up property developer, mainly focused on multifamily and single-family, high-end luxury,” he introduced himself. Massachi emphasized the integral role of design in his projects, highlighting his distinct approach compared to others in the industry. “Well, I work with interior designers, but I bring a heavy emphasis of design to development. Whereas not every developer or investor in the industry has an eye for design. I’m very design-oriented,” he explained. “From everything from the initial acquisition all the way to operation, we put a heavy emphasis on functional design and uniqueness.”

When asked about his creative process, Massachi delved into the unconventional thinking that drives his projects. “A lot of what I do with the multifamily, let’s say projects, we think literally outside the box, which is what you see a lot of in LA,” he described. “So, for instance, I’m doing a project where it’s a five-story building, instead of it being just a rectangle with the architect, we designed an elaborate terracing structure that also cascades.” He continued, “So every single facade looks completely different. And we use a lot of steel to make it, to bring movement, whereas a lot of people just wouldn’t invest the time or money to even do something like that.” Massachi’s dedication to innovation extends beyond aesthetics to practical solutions for urban living challenges. “We’re trying to positively influence the urban cityscape by being creative, by thinking out of the box, and by building things that are just completely different,” he emphasized.

Reflecting on his current projects, Massachi shared his excitement for upcoming ventures. “I’m working on a lot of projects. That one is like, for instance, that apartment project is the one that’s closest to completion. It’ll be done next month. My other ones are all in planning,” he revealed. One notable aspect of Massachi Industries’ portfolio is its exploration of high-density housing solutions, including micro-housing. “We’re also looking at micro-housing, which is maybe a 500 square foot one bedroom, that everything is packed in,” Massachi elaborated. “On those units in particular, we will fully furnish the unit. So whenever the end user or tenant comes, all they have to do is bring a backpack, suitcase, and everything is turnkey.” He added, “When you work with a space that small, that’s less than 500 sqft, if you don’t imagine it for the end user and let them do it, you have to do it because it’s too small.” Massachi sees micro-housing as a solution for addressing affordability issues in expensive markets. “So it’s interesting because in these markets that are very expensive, we’re doing a lot of the micro typology because it does, in a way, become affordable because it’s so small,” he noted.

Transitioning to his recent experiences, Massachi discussed his visit to a showroom and factory, where he gained deeper insights into the craftsmanship and customization involved in luxury furnishings. “Actually, I thought it was very interesting. I had no idea how custom and handmade everything was,” he admitted. “I didn’t really understand the extent of it until I was here. But now I understand the amount of work that goes in and the lead times and the craftsmanship and how everything is truly unique, even if you don’t customize it.” He expressed admiration for the diverse range of products and brands he encountered, singling out Boca do Lobo as a personal favorite. “I think Boca do Lobo is my favorite,” he shared. Massachi also highlighted the appeal of Koket, a brand that caught his attention for its art deco influences. “But I saw for the first time the brand that’s also owned by the wife of the owner, Koket, which I think is very interesting,” he noted. “There was, like some art deco influence in some of the pieces that I saw in the factory that I really liked.”

Concluding the interview, Massachi emphasized the importance of inspiration and collaboration in his creative process. “I think the most important thing is the inspiration and the creativity and the magic that arises when you’re around the design professionals and seeing all the products together and how it all synthesizes,” he concluded. As Alex Massachi continues to push the boundaries of property development, his dedication to design excellence and innovation promises to shape the future of luxury living experiences. “It’s the first time. I flew in yesterday and it’s been raining since, so I’m going to discover it soon. It looks really beautiful, and I love the hotel. It’s a very interesting hotel,” Massachi remarked, hinting at more exciting endeavors on the horizon.
