Selldorf Architects was established by Annabelle Selldorf in 1988, and ever since then, the company has worked on public and private projects that range from museums and libraries to even recycling facilities. They have also been involved in the construction of new buildings as well as in the restoration of historic interiors, and in the conception of furniture design. Today CovetED invites you to enter their design world. Keep reading to find out more.
Annabelle Selldorf is the Principal of Selldorf Architects. Born and raised in Germany, she received a Bachelor of Architecture degree from Pratt Institute, and a Master of Architecture degree from Syracuse University in Florence, Italy. Annabelle Selldorf is also a fellow of the American Institute of Architects; an Academician of the National Academy Museum and serves on the Board of the Architectural League of New York and the Chinati Foundation.

Their design approach engages a critical process that eliminates the unnecessary and proposes clear, succinct solutions in which all elements—from broad concept to fine detail—coexist in a carefully considered balance. The company has particular expertise in the specific demands of cultural and art-related projects, with significant experience in the gallery, exhibition, and studio spaces; as well as museums, art foundations, and collectors’ homes.

Annabelle’s practice, however, transcends any niche classification, with projects ranging from a recycling center in Brooklyn to a drive-in in Manhattan high-rise, to the exquisite villas at Utah’s Amangiri resort.
The company has also worked on a Manhattan outpost (built to LEED Gold standards) for art dealer David Zwirner. Its exterior, lobby, and central stairwell clad in rugged board-formed concrete, smartly accented with teak. Other than that, Annabelle has also worked on structures for the forthcoming Parc des Ateliers, an art-and-research center in Arles, France.
