Get Personal with Janet Morais: The Visionary Behind KOKET

Launching a business from scratch is never easy, especially in the world of luxury furniture. But Janet Morais, founder and CEO of the bold décor brand KOKET, took on the challenge with fearless determination. Today, KOKET is admired worldwide, and Janet stands as a creative mastermind and empowering female leader in the interior design industry.

We sat down with Janet to learn more about her story, inspirations, and vision for the future.

Who is Janet Morais?

I am the founder and CEO of KOKET, as well as the luxury lifestyle magazine Love Happens and the brand agency DeMorais International. Beyond business, I’m a proud mother of two boys, wife to an incredible man, and daughter to the most wonderful parents. Above all, I’m a lover of all things unique and inspiring.

What is your mission—and KOKET’s?

Personally, my mission is to share my joie de vivre and encourage others to take risks in defining their own style and lifestyle. KOKET’s mission is to inspire love and empower through daring statement pieces and design-driven experiences.

Tell us about your professional journey.

My career began in fashion as a personal stylist, then took me to Portugal as Marketing Director for the U.S. Pavilion at Expo ’98 in Lisbon. Eventually, my passion for interior design led me to launch DeMorais International in 2008, and two years later, KOKET. My vision was to create furniture that truly spoke to me—pieces that didn’t yet exist in the market. Today, I continue to lead KOKET, run my agency, design selectively, and publish Love Happens.

What inspired you to create KOKET?

The journey began in 2010 when I sketched a chair in a New York lounge and felt compelled to bring it to life. That single design sparked a desire to create more empowering pieces, giving birth to KOKET.

What inspires you most?

Exotic materials and jewelry.

How would you describe KOKET’s style?

Daring, high-impact, and slightly risqué, yet always sophisticated and elegant. It’s very much a reflection of my personal style.

What challenges do designers face today?

Staying relevant in an oversaturated market. Finding your voice and keeping it heard is a constant challenge.

What advice would you give aspiring designers?

Start with an internship—it’s the best way to gain real experience. At KOKET, we offer a summer program because supporting young creative minds is something I’m truly passionate about.

What’s next for you and KOKET?

We recently launched KKbyKOKET, a collection designed for a younger audience seeking quality with a fresh edge. I’ll continue to expand this line while also growing Love Happens. And who knows—maybe even a jewelry or shoe line in the future!

One fun fact?

I love to laugh—and to make others laugh!
