From Kuwait to Qatar | Eng. Hussain Al-Saleh on Design, Budget, and Innovation

October 1, 2024

In an exclusive conversation with CovetED Magazine, we had the pleasure of interviewing Engineer Hussain Al-Saleh, the visionary founder of Bold United Architecture & Contracting. Established in 2018, this innovative design and build firm has been making waves in the Middle Eastern architectural scene. Below are some key highlights from our discussion.

Expanding Bold United Across the Middle East

“Our journey began in Kuwait,” explains Eng. Hussain, “and soon after, we expanded to Qatar. We’re involved in the entire process, from design to the completion of the building itself.” Bold United has grown substantially in just a few years, now boasting a team of around 200 professionals across both countries. The firm primarily works on private villas, but has also completed commercial projects such as gyms, coffee shops, and restaurants.

Balancing Budget and Design Excellence

One of the core challenges in architectural design is meeting the client’s expectations within their budget. Eng. Hussain emphasizes the importance of achieving this balance: “We work closely with the client, dividing the budget in a way that allows us to invest in precious elements, while also complementing them with cost-effective solutions to maintain a beautiful and appealing design.”

The Role of AI in Design—Human Creativity Still Wins

As technology continues to evolve, AI is becoming more prevalent in the architectural field. However, Eng. Hussain asserts that human creativity remains irreplaceable: “We’ve experimented with AI designs, but when we present them alongside designs done by our team, clients consistently prefer the human touch.” He adds, “The designer’s taste is crucial. While AI can assist, the creativity and vision of a designer cannot be replicated.”

Challenges of Sourcing Materials in the Middle East

When it comes to sourcing materials, Bold United faces unique challenges in the Middle Eastern market. “We don’t have the same resources as Europe,” says Eng. Hussain. “For example, ordering a piece from Boca do Lobo could take up to seven months, so we must plan and manage our time effectively to complete projects on schedule.”

The Importance of Moodboards and Samples in Client Collaboration

Eng. Hussain highlights the collaborative nature of their design process, which starts with moodboards to convey the project’s vision. “From the moodboard, we introduce certain branded items, and then blend them with our overall design to create a cohesive final look,” he says. Additionally, they provide clients with physical samples of materials such as wood, marble, and fabric to ensure that every detail is just right.

The Value of Handcrafted Furniture

One of the most striking aspects of Bold United’s work is their appreciation for handcrafted furniture. “I’ve visited many factories worldwide,” Eng. Hussain shares, “and while many rely on machinery, handcrafted pieces tell a different story. They’re unique, with no two pieces alike. I even brought a client to experience this firsthand, to see the effort and artistry involved in creating these exceptional works.”

Staying Ahead of Trends and Creativity

Eng. Hussain’s approach to architecture and design is deeply rooted in constant exploration. “You have to travel and stay open to new ideas, trends, and colors,” he says. He and his partner, Abdulla, have formed specialized teams within the company to focus on various design styles—from minimalist to contemporary and new classic. “Each designer has their own line, and we encourage them to innovate while keeping up with trends.”

A Bond with Boca do Lobo

Closing the interview, Eng. Hussain expressed his gratitude for his collaboration with Boca do Lobo, a high-end furniture brand that resonates with his passion for unique, handcrafted pieces. “I feel like part of the Boca do Lobo family,” he says warmly.

This dedication to craftsmanship, creativity, and collaboration is what sets Bold United Architecture & Contracting apart, making them a firm to watch in the ever-evolving world of luxury design.
