Nestling in the idyllic village of Carvalhal in Comporta, just an hour outside Lisbon, Quinta da Comporta is a Wellness Boutique Resort designed by Portuguese architect Miguel Câncio Martins. The understated traditional and contemporary elegance of the estate, which unfolds in every detail, beckons guests for a blissfully relaxing retreat. With its solar-heated 40m-long infinity pool overlooking the rice fields, its two barn-like 800 sq.m. structures (housing Oryza Spa on one side of the Eira Bar, and the restaurant Mar d’Arrozal on the other), townhouses, pool villas, rooms and suites provide the ideal resort setting for a deeply rewarding journey inwards.

After studying architecture at the art school of ESA Saint-Luc in Brussels, Miguel Câncio Martins began his career developing restaurant concepts in Paris. He designed the Barfly in 1995 and then such famous hang-outs as the Buddha bar, Thiou and Man Ray … which brought him international acclaim. He then branched out into the design of stores, hotels, nightclubs and private homes, accomplishing projects all over the world including the Conrad Resort in the Algarve, the Hotel Heritage in Lisbon and the Hotel W in Montreal. His work has gained worldwide recognition for the way he interprets spaces and turns them into something truly unique, ever guided by the same three criteria: harmonization, exclusivity and sophistication
The architect eventually settled in Portugal, opening his agency Miguel Câncio Martins – Architecture & Design, where, together with 20 partners, he designs projects for multinationals, real estate investors and private individuals on the global stage. Quinta da Comporta is his first flagship property to honor the legacy of a place he has regarded as his second home for more than 40 years. The personal connection that Miguel feels with the destination strengthens his commitment to perpetuating Comporta’s authenticity. From protection of the natural scenery and the surrounding ecosystems to respect for traditional architecture and the unique and historical character of the site and the local community, Miguel has left nothing to chance.
Quinta da Comporta is located in Carvalhal, one of the seven villages which make up Herdade da Comporta, along a coastline of white sandy beaches stretching as far as the eye can see, between acres of pine trees and green rice fields. Comporta nature reserve lies an hour to the south of the European capital city of Lisbon. This is the destination for unwinding and enjoying nature to the full, whilst indulging in an effortless, timeless experience of luxury
Chef João Sousa conjures up a sublime journey for the senses in the dishes served at Mar d’Arrozal (which means sea of rice field in Portuguese). His cooking is inspired by local culinary traditions and seasonal fare, elevated by his immense creativity and technique. The chef gives precedence to locally sourced fresh, organic produce, with fish and seafood grilled to perfection, succulently tender meat and fresh pickings from the estate’s vegetable garden. This contemporary, Mediterranean cuisine whisks diners away on an authentic and local culinary adventure. Savor your meal while looking out over Comporta’s rice fields in an elegant and cozy atmosphere.
For a truly relaxing time, the ORYZA Spa provides unique services to soothe the body and calm the mind: body massages and scrubs for physical restoration; aroma-based rituals to discover a new sense of harmony, revitalizing facial treatments or oriental and holistic therapies such as Acupuncture and Fire Cupping to align your body’s energy flow with your state of mind. Also discover ORYZA LAB, an authentic, scientific care brand combining Comporta’s cultural heritage with French cosmetic expertise, using Comporta rice as the core element of its expert formulas.
