After studying architecture at the art school of ESA Saint-Luc in Brussels, Miguel Câncio Martins began his career developing restaurant concepts in Paris. He designed the Barfly in 1995 and then such famous hang-outs as the Buddha bar, Thiou and Man Ray … which brought him international acclaim. He then branched out into the design of stores, hotels, nightclubs and private homes, accomplishing projects all over the world including the Conrad Resort in the Algarve, the Hotel Heritage in Lisbon and the Hotel W in Montreal. His work has gained worldwide recognition for the way he interprets spaces and turns them into something truly unique, ever guided by the same three criteria: harmonization, exclusivity and sophistication

The architect eventually settled in Portugal, opening his agency Miguel Câncio Martins – Architecture & Design, where, together with 20 partners, he designs projects for multinationals, real estate investors and private individuals on the global stage. Quinta da Comporta is his first flagship property to honor the legacy of a place he has regarded as his second home for more than 40 years. The personal connection that Miguel feels with the destination strengthens his commitment to perpetuating Comporta’s authenticity. Chef João Sousa conjures up a sublime journey for the senses in the dishes served at Mar d’Arrozal (which means sea of rice field in Portuguese).
