The silhouette of the El Palace Hotel, in the centre of Barcelona, is unmistakable. The modernist stamp printed by architect Eduard Ferrés i Puig in 1919 did not lose an ounce of its elegance, which is reflected in its corridors, halls, rooms and on the façade. El Palace celebrates 100 years this year and preserves its prestige as one of the best luxury hotels in Europe. The centenary establishment went through economic crises, expropriations, years of adjustments during the postwar period but it always recovered, remaining as one of the most emblematic hotels in Barcelona. Join CovetED as we celebrate this astonishing space!

El Palace was founded by the politician Francesc Cambó, the creator of the Regionalist League, who used his contacts with King Alfonso XIII to convince the Swiss businessman César Ritz to manage the establishment under his signature. Ritz would die a year before the official opening, but he gave his stamp to the new hotel that presented spacious rooms, indirect lighting, light fabrics, fresh flowers, paint on the walls instead of the wallpaper and decorative fireplaces.

Four years ago El Palace underwent an ambitious comprehensive reform aimed at enhancing the spaces and improving its facilities, among which stands out the Diana Garden terrace, 750 square meters; and The Art Suites, dedicated to his most illustrious personalities such as Dalí, Josephine Baker, Joan Miró, César Ritz, Carlos Ruiz Zafón and Ronnie Wood.

October 22nd marks the centenary date and, as part of the festivities, a book with photographs of its history will be published for which they ask the guests, clients or those who have spent a few moments in the hotel to send their images. Although since the change of ownership four years ago it stopped being called Ritz, the stamp of the Swiss brand is still part of its identity. As Le Gall points out, “it will be known as the Ritz all his life.”
