The New Champion x HVN Is Everything You Ever Wanted –The 90’s sportswear brand Champion has been living its second life. The brand achieved its highest back in the late 90’s when they were the main sponsor of the NBA league. After that, brands like Adidas, Nike and others started to expand their influence, leaving Champion in the shadows of their glorious past. But, thanks to the new 90’s renaissance trends, Champion has been coming back to life once more to show the world they’re not just done yet. Recently, the American brand announced a partnership with Harley Viera-Newton or HVN. And their collection is everything you want to see in sports gear…
At first blush, Harley Viera-Newton and Champion might seem an unlikely match. Viera-Newton makes charming, super-feminine dresses; Champion makes gray sweatshirts. But Viera-Newton insists they have more in common than you’d think: “What ties our two brands together is this appreciation for classic, vintage silhouettes,” she says. “They’re both [resources for] pieces you keep in your closet forever.”
Viera-Newton is a self-professed Champion lover. She doesn’t just wear it to the gym, either; she also collects special pieces from its Tokyo store, where she travels often for work. So, she jumped at the chance to collaborate with the nearly 100-year-old brand, and Urban Outfitters signed on as the exclusive retailer. A year in the making, HVN x Champion includes heritage styles from Champion’s archive in sweet HVN prints: cherries, pink gingham, palm trees, and leopards. In the lookbook, Slick Woods and Lily Jean Harvey wear the prints head to toe, right down to their socks and bucket hats.
In fact, if you’re really feeling that “coordinated look,” as Viera-Newton puts it, you can even add one of her printed hair accessories, which she launched on her own website earlier this week. “I’m a sucker for matching your scrunchie or hair scarf to your dress,” she says.
“I like that about our Champion pieces, too—you can have some fun with the matching hoodies and shorts.” – Harley Viera-Newton
Consider it a sweeter spin on athleisure, or sweats for the girl who lives in dresses. “I think you can see that the same person would appreciate both the dresses and the sweats,” Viera-Newton says. “It’s the same customer wearing them.”
