Homo Faber in Venice is a remarkable exhibition celebrating the artistry of contemporary craftsmanship. Hosted at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini, the event offeres a deeper dive into human experience, presenting a series of ten curated exhibitions across several thematic categories, each showcasing unique cultural interpretations and traditional techniques infused with modern innovation.
The artistic direction, helmed by filmmaker Luca Guadagnino and architect Nicolò Rosmarini, played a crucial role in transforming Homo Faber into a fantastical journey. Their vision is centered around blending reality with dreamlike elements. Each room features meticulously crafted displays that engage the senses, using light, space, and the interplay of materials to evoke emotional responses linked to the different stages of life. For example, the “Dreams” section immerses visitors in a darkened, ethereal space with floating mannequins draped in Alaïa garments, reflecting an enigmatic dreamscape.
“Birth” captures the essence of new beginnings with artisans presenting organic and raw materials symbolizing creation and origin.
“Nature” celebrates the intersection of natural forms and sustainable craftsmanship. Notable works include a wood marquetry side table shaped like a caladium leaf by Brazilian designer Silvia Furmanovich and intricate sculptures from lightning-struck oak by UK artists Barnaby Ash and Dru Plumb.
“Dreams” delves into surrealism and subconscious visions, using fashion and masks to explore identity and mystery. Spanish designer Cecilio Castrillo’s leather masks and Filipino artist Leeroy New’s vibrant silicone creations stand out as evocative interpretations of the dream state.
Homo Faber 2024 showcased more than 800 works from over 400 artisans across 105 crafts. The selection of artists reflected a commitment to preserving endangered skills, while also fostering creativity in new directions. For example, Italian artist Massimiliano Pelletti reinterpreted The Three Graces in modern materials like Mexican white onyx, combining classical forms with contemporary execution. Among the notable artisans was UK-based Charlotte Bourru, whose 3D paper world maps reflect themes of travel and exploration, and Gunjan Gupta’s throne-like chair crafted from traditional Indian cane baskets, which merged functional design with cultural heritage.
A distinctive feature of Homo Faber is its participatory nature. The event included several workshops, allowing visitors to engage hands-on with the crafts. One such highlight is the Japanese bookbinding workshop by Antica Legatoria Ofer, where participants learned the ancient art of stab-binding, creating personalized journals. Globe-making sessions led by Leonardo Frigo guided attendees through the process of constructing miniature globes, fostering a deeper connection to historical craftsmanship.
Beyond the visual and tactile experiences, Homo Faber 2024 enriched the journey with gastronomic delights. Ristorante La Vela offered fine dining with contemporary Venetian cuisine curated by Michelin-starred chef Salvatore Sodano, enhancing the event’s luxurious ambiance. Additionally, smaller dining experiences like La Cicchetteria reflect the local Venetian tradition of cicchetti, offering a taste of the region’s culinary artistry.
Expanding beyond the main event, Homo Faber in Città opened doors to 70 artisan workshops throughout Venice, providing visitors with a rare opportunity to explore the city’s hidden craftsmanship. Collaborations with the Fondazione Cologni dei Mestieri d’Arte further highlighted Venice’s rich artisan legacy.
Homo Faber 2024 offered more than just an exhibition—it’s an immersive journey that fuses traditional craftsmanship with modern interpretations, providing a sensory and intellectual exploration of life’s most profound moments. The combination of visionary artisans, interactive workshops, and curated experiences made this event a unique celebration of human creativity and skill, set against the backdrop of one of the world’s most iconic cities.
