The DWP Global Summit 2024, organized by the Global Enabling Sustainability Initiative (GeSi), is currently underway in Cascais, bringing together over 300 world leaders. Held at the Estoril Congress Center, this pivotal event aims to accelerate the adoption of digital innovations that benefit society and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

This year’s summit introduces a new theme: Sustainable Finance, adding to the agenda topics of Biodiversity, Education, and Smart and Sustainable Cities. Each theme is spearheaded by national and international experts, including Helena de Freitas (UNESCO Chair), Veerle Vandeweerd (co-founder of COVIDEA), and Giorgia Rambelli (Mission Innovation Urban Transitions Mission Director at the Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate & Energy – GCoM).

Key Discussions and Innovations

The summit explores critical topics such as the role of digital technology in water management, ethical and human-centered issues related to Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI), and the potential of gaming as an educational tool. Concrete measures to activate the “DWP 2023 Manifesto,” summarizing conclusions from previous discussions, are also presented. The event includes lectures, roundtables, and workshops where partnerships are announced, goals are set, and essential factors for achieving the UN’s SDGs by 2030 are identified.

Engaging the Community

Cascais, renowned for its sustainability initiatives, provides an inspiring backdrop for discussions. The summit aims to strengthen the city’s commitment to sustainability, engaging citizens with relevant issues. The Municipality of Cascais plays a crucial role, positioning itself at the forefront of future and digital discussions.

The summit features a main stage and an innovation stage, alongside roundtables, workshops, and public “Night Summit Dialogues.” A highlight is the launch of the “Lifestyletest,” a European project in collaboration with local authorities to measure individual carbon footprints and promote sustainable lifestyles. All attendees are encouraged to participate.

Fostering Sustainable and Smart Cities

Sustainable Finance joins the established agenda topics of Biodiversity, Education, and Smart and Sustainable Cities. Expert panels led by figures like Professor Helena de Freitas, Veerle Vandeweerd, and Giorgia Rambelli ensure robust discussions. Throughout the summit, critical issues such as digital water management, ethical AI development, and gaming for education are addressed.
