British designer Tom Dixon has been one of the most active presences of the London Design Festival of 2019. With his initiative, titled “TouchySmellyFeelyNoisyTasty,” he turned his King’s Cross headquarters—the Coal Office—into an incredible immersive “multi-sensory lab.” CovetED will be showing you a sample of this amazing display.
Throughout the event, Tom Dixon has managed to attract a relevant crowd to the Coal Office. These last few days he’s staged a set of initiatives which include product launches, talks, and incredible demonstrations. This was all divided across three meticulously designed spaces. It managed to attract around 22,000 visitors over the course of the past nine days.
‘As designers, we look at everything. We determine the shape, the colours and the aesthetics of a space before anything else,” said Dixon, as a statement to Interior Design “But here in the Coal Office we wanted to explore the role that all our other, often less recognized senses contribute to our experiences of design; the smell and the taste of a place, the textures and tone of a space, the sound of an interior or the weight of an object. We are multisensory animals.”

Within each arch, there was a surprise from Dixon! For example, in the“TouchyFeely” arch, Dixon showcased a new modular razor from bespoke brand Harry’s in a scenario reminiscent of a spirited barbershop setup. Meanwhile, in the “Textiles” arch, Tom Dixon showed a new textile line (in collaboration with Scottish mill Bute Fabrics) exhibiting the new trend through his 2019 Fat sofa, chair, and chaise, all of which were revested in the fabric. There was also the “Perfumery” arch, which opted to add a rustic touch to the display, featuring Tom Dixon’s two new candle and diffuser fragrances.
The real marvel, however, was the reveal of an upright LED chandelier, that Tom Dixon conceived with Swedish synthesizer company Teenage Engineering. What makes this latest lighting product so special? The fact that its eight floor-to-ceiling LEDs change colour in time to music which is controlled by Teenage Engineering DJs. Lastly, the exhibit also included a pop-up bar which hosted a tasting in partnership with Perrier-Jouët and Champagne Ambassador Jonathan Simms.
