Joana Vasconcelos is back at Serralves for the first time since her first exhibition in 1996 with some of her most known works like Burka (2002), Red Independent art (2005), Marilyn (2011), Lilicoptère (2012) and other specially created for the occasion. Red wood boxes with “Fragile” Stamps, ladders, mirrors or feathers are some of the materials and sculptures you can see in one of the most awaited exhibitions of the year. “I’m your mirror” is the name of the new display of the artist, whose title appears as a tribute to Nico, the German vocalist of the Velvet Underground band, based in New York.

The artist’s productions in Porto contain some Portuguese references, as you can see in the piece “Portugal a Banhos” (2010), a vertical fiberglass pool in the shape of the map of Portugal. The identity of Serralves is preserved in Vasconcelos’s exhibition organization with its open spaces and gardens. Other than the one in the Guggenheim museum where the pieces were all in one wide room, the ones in Serralves are in outdoor spaces. “Solitaire” (2018), a large engagement ring made from 112 metalized car rims and 1300 crystal glasses, is the first piece we can see in the beautiful gardens of Serralves. “Marilyn” (2011), a pair of high-heeled shoes made with pots, is one other you can find displayed outdoors.

Vasconcelos’s work has been changing and turning into the exception and she is always deciding to challenge the paradigm. The violence of genre, the exploitation of women, migration, the relation with the past, present, and future through timeless pieces are present in her show in Porto. “A máscara”/ I’ll be your mirror (2018) is the center of the exhibition and it was made for the Guggenheim, in Bilbao, the curator of this exhibition and partnered with Serralves. Is a representation of Joana Vasconcelos herself, taking off the mask, and showing her true self to the world, the diversity and multiple personalities she has. It weighs 2,5 tonnes and it’s made with 231 frames of double mirrors.
