Marc Newson

Mar Newson is a name you might already have heard. He is considered one of the most influential designers of his generation and in the contemporary art world. He is famous for having worked in several different fields as well as collaborated with various prestigious and renowned brands such as – Apple, Louis Vuitton, Montblanc, Hermès, Nike, Hennessy, Dom Pérignon, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and Beretta, only to name a few.

Even though he has his own company, he has also played important roles with other companies. From 2005 to 2015, he was the Creative Director of Qantas Airways, as well as Apple’s designer for special projects such as the design of the “Apple Watch” (2014).

You can view his unique contemporary art pieces as a permanent collection of many major museums including: The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York, San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Design Museum (London), V&A Museum (London), Musée National d’Art Moderne, Centre Pompidou (Paris), Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris), Vitra Design Museum (Germany), Museum Angewandte Kunst (Frankfurt), Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg, Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen (Rotterdam), Israel Museum (Jerusalem), Powerhouse Museum (Sydney), and the National Gallery of Victoria (Melbourne).

Previously to creating actual outstanding contemporary art, Eric Schmitt’s sketches become a technical drawing and model before they are actually taken to the hand of incredibly gifted; craftsmen, metalworkers, glassmakers, and marble workers. Once that is finalized, the piece is then patinated and assembled.

The result is a mix of contemporary art pieces that are mainly created out of folded bronze, or associated with materials which contrast with the rigidity of the metal.

Studio MVW at Galerie BSL

The contemporary art Studio MVW was founded in Shanghai by Xu Ming along with Virginie Moriette. They are famous for their sculptural, architectural designs and ability to subtly connect contemporary Western and Eastern aesthetics. With over twenty years of experience in architecture, interior and furniture design, Studio MVW has won numerous awards in Asia and Europe, including the Architectural Digest AD China 100 Design Talents Award (2017, 2015 and 2013); Wallpaper* Design Award (2018, 2014); ELLE Decoration International Design Award (2013).

Showcasing now at the Galerie BSL – “BLOOMING” – is a series of contemporary art pieces based on the tale of a Chinese “blue and white” icon that crossed centuries and frontiers. Born during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), the Ming vase finds new garments and functionalities under Studio MVW’s creative impulse. – This contemporary art piece is not only visually appealing, but it can also actually transforming itself into a cabinet, a console, a floor lamp or a suspended light, revealing immaculate white secret receptacles.

“SHUIDI”, also showcasing at the Galerie BSL, is a collection of bookcases created out of anodized stainless-steel and colored in copper. Its inspiration comes from the ancient Chinese gardens, and it’s one of those contemporary pieces that are impossible not to love.
