After you’ve crossed the old iron bridge (located next to the Porta Genova railway station) you immediately feel a shift in the tone of the streets. If you happen to be passing by during one certain particular event (aka Milan Design Week, or more specifically during Fuori Salone) you’re in for a ride in fashion, design, and photography.

During the period of the event, “Zona Tortona” becomes an exposition of the best of the latest design trends. Lofts, photographic and design studios, showrooms, workshops, fashion ateliers and industrial sites in the district are transformed into exhibition areas where each year over one hundred companies present their best products from their previous years.

Not only that but in this area, there are many shops, bars, and restaurants, that also adhere to the wave of Milan Design Week and Fuori Salone, welcoming lots of design aficionados in the area. Even if you just happen to be passing by Milan right now there are many options for you to check out, from some design hotspot references to some of the finest restaurants you can munch on.

One of the main attractions you can check out at this district during any time is the Giorgio Armani’s fashion and art museum (Armani/Silos), where you can see a showcase of the designer’s full career. Located in a former Nestlé granary you can also see some photography exhibitions while you’re there.

Another wonderful suggestion for you to see in this place is the Superstudio building, founded by Italian Vogue art director Flavio Lucchini and photographer Fabrizio Ferri in 1983. This place is one of the favourite stops for design fans during Milan Design Week, mostly because of its innovative design exhibitions and also for being one of the main points for Fuorisalone activities.

Lastly, there’s MUDEC, yet another cultural organization that made its home in an old factory space of Milan. Here you can check out more than 7,000 artworks, objects, textiles, and musical instruments that come from every continent. Truly a marvel for design fans not to miss.
