Following what is now a tradition at miart – a fair that for years has used a themed, multimedia-based campaign in its communications – Horizon is a cinematographic style picture story celebrating the theme of art as a place of exploration, discovery and change.
The main characters in this story are a group of teenagers cast in a natural environment and depicted over the course of a summer’s day, from dawn to dusk. Like an imaginary film about the spontaneity with which we face adult life, this campaign portrays adolescence as a time of experimentation and fearlessness, suggesting a parallel with art as an open outlook towards the possibilities of the future.
The medium within which the actions of the teenagers in Horizon take place is water, which evokes the transition from one state to another as well as the dimensions of travel, traversing and hybridization. An element to immerse oneself in and to emerge from, just as art enables us both to probe psychological depth and also to contemplate the surfacing of original forms and new values.
Starting in October 2018 and continuing until miart opens to the public on 5 April 2019, Horizon will occupy different platforms and make use of different media, involving the languages of moving images and performing arts to reflect the many souls of miart: a fair in which history and the present day are in dialogue and that, with works ranging from the early 20th century up to the most recent artistic experimentation, aims to broaden its own chronological horizon of reference.
During miart 2019, the section Object, curated by Hugo Macdonald, will focus on galleries active in the promotion of experimental design, decorative arts and limited editions and collectible design.
