Maison et Objet 2019 – The Designer of the Year 2019 Conference – MAISON&OBJET is the major event for professionals working in the art of living in all its rich and varied expressions. The lifestyle show brings together a 360°product offering. Decoration, design, furniture, accessories, textiles, fragrances, the world of children, tableware… The styles coexist in a multifaceted way, throughout the inventive show design which enlivens the spaces. This extraordinary diversity is in line with the varied expectations of global markets. With each session, the great lifestyle platform, at the intersection of business and creativity, reveals solutions to visitors from around the world in search of uniqueness. Well, today was a rather special day, as it hosted one of the most interesting and expected conferences of the show: Sebastian Herckner, the designer of the year.

At 37, German designer Sebastian Herkner, who trained at Offenbach University of Art and Design, is embarking on an ever-growing number of collaborations with international design houses (no less than 21 projects in the pipeline during 2018 for Moroso, Dedon, Thonet and Lintello to name but a few), and over the course of the past decade has received some thirty awards in recognition of his innovative yet traditional work.
‘’My aim is to find a way to balance craftsmanship with new technologies’’.
Since first setting up his studio in the Frankfurt suburb of Offenbach am Main back in 2006, Sebastian Herkner has unremittingly focused on creating designs that fuse tradition with creativity, new technology with craftsmanship. An approach he adopted long before the design world started surfing this now supremely fashionable wave.
His unconditional love for traditional craftsmanship was what guided his first landmark design, the “Bell” table, whose steel and brass platter nestles on a hand-blown glass base produced in a centuries-old Bavarian glass factory.
‘’it was very difficult to find someone who could blow the glass of the base of a table, I had to research a lot.’’
As for the wishes of the acclaimed young designer for the next 10 years, nothing is more important than changing the way we consume goods. In his mind, we should always invest in quality materials and craftspeople, as it becomes harder and harder to create waste.
’I wish in the next 10 years the crafts still matters. The materials are also in the right way. We just really need to change our consume patters’. I don’t have a plan for the next 10. I think I have some great companies I’d like to work with. Some new challenges’’.
