Over its 28 years, SIHH Genève has made its mark as the reference among international fine watch shows by building on a unique concept that fulfils the expectations of exhibitors and visitors alike. Each January, this magnificent setting becomes a place to meet, to exchange points of view and make new discoveries with, at its heart, the spotlighting of the latest creations in watchmaking. SIHH positions itself as the stage for emerging trends and a powerful voice for the sector.
Montblanc continues to stride forth with a fusillade of new models and a particular focus on ‘vintage’ styles: behold, the new Star Legacy collection, which takes inspiration from the company’s Minerva manufacture, and in particular its pocket watches from the late 19th and early 20th century, with retro touches including ‘onion’ crowns and stepped lugs.
Originally conceived in collaboration with French designer Marc Berthier, last year’s re-edition of the Carré H featured an upsized stainless-steel case, guilloché dial and superbly balanced Arabic numerals and inner minute track.
Cartier returns this year with its Privé collection highlighting its timeless designs and high-end calibres, not least with the re-introduction of the classic Tonneau, which first appeared in 1906.
This year, VC has launched an entirely new movement which regulates at two separate frequencies, one that runs the watch while it is being worn, and another that maintains its timekeeping abilities for up to 65 days. The ‘standby mode’ uses an innovative twin-balance wheel system certainly adds new meaning to the term ‘perpetual’ calendar.
The numbers assembled at this Vallée de Joux-based brand are impressive: 180 specialist skills and trades assembled at its manufacture; along nearly 1,250 calibers created; a whacking 400 patents secured. But the number to not here is 100, the limited volume of pieces being produced displaying several aspects of JLC’s ‘rare handcrafts’: the fine guilloche work on its enamelled dial, a redesigned moon phase and engraved counters, and the ultra-slim (10.6mm) 39mm white gold case.
Panerai announces its new partnership with the 36th America’s Cup challenger with a striking carbon-cased Submersible fitted with a dial made from Luna Rosa’s sailcloth. Fit to travel to 300m, the watch is fitted with a two-barrel shock-resistant movement good for 70 hours.
Starting from a blank page, the brand that brought you the era-defining Royal Oak has produced a 13-strong collection that runs from a ‘simple three hand with date automatic to a top of the line ‘super sonnerie’ minute-repeater. All bar an open worked tourbillon feature lacquered dials, galvanically grown Arabic’s and indexes and both the automatic and new flyback chronograph bost new in house movements.
