David Rockwell Designs Incredible Tile Collection for Bisazza ⇒ American architect and designer David Rockwell, Founder and President of the Rockwell Group, has designed a cement tile collection for the Italian luxury tile manufacturer Bisazza. The Tonal Collection by David Rockwell is a new series of bold graphic patterns offering a contemporary, sophisticated architectural approach to traditional cement tiles. This marks David Rockwell’s first collection for the brand and Bisazza’s first collaboration with an American designer.

Rockwell‘s first collection for the brand draws on his experience as a set and hospitality designer to bring a sense of theatricality to cement tiles for floor or wall applications, which can be used both for interior and exterior schemes. “Light is a critical element in all the work I do as an architect and theatre set designer. In my new collection for Bisazza, I explored the idea of how light transforms surfaces and environments. We have created a series of multi-tone tiles that generate ombré patterns suggesting a sense of depth, undulation and vibrancy”, says David Rockwell.

The Tonal collection is part of the brand’s Cementiles range of cement tiles and is comprised of four colourways – warm neutrals, cool neutrals, blues and rust shades -, providing the building blocks for creating a variety of unique surface patterns. With Cementiles, the brand blends design value with the appeal of artisan craftsmanship and expands its product line for the interior décor of both private homes and trendy public venues, in keeping with the aesthetic code of the brand and its previous collections.

Cementiles is a collection featuring a contemporary, sophisticated interpretation of traditional cement tiles typically used in the palaces and mansions of nobility and upper-class during the second half of the 1800s and early 1900s. Since its first introduction in 2015, the Cementiles range has been enriched with numerous decorative series signed by internationally renown designers, boasting collaborations with Paola Navone, Tom Dixon, Jaime Hayon, India Mahdavi, Carlo Dal Bianco, Bisazza Design Studio, Fernando & Humberto Campana and, most recently, David Rockwell. The collection communicates the decorative style of the past and present through expressive artistic language that reveals the creative genius of each of the project designers.

Made entirely by hand and available in two formats – 20x20cm square or 20x23cm hexagonal – each Cementile is unprecedented and unique. Attentive craftsmanship adds allure and personality to the collection, which features a rich palette of colours and the sumptuous wealth of contemporary and classic graphic motifs that lend a bold, modern expressive identity to the products. In this particular collaboration, the 20x20cm tiles have been designed with a creative composition in mind and can be combined in a myriad of ways to suggest movement and soft ombré transitions, coordinate with an existing space or connect back to architectural structures.

The individual matt finish tiles are enhanced by four contrasting colour palettes and can be pieced together to form stripes, grids, squares, zigzags, medallions and waves adding texture and a sense of movement to the floors and walls of any space.
