Get Ready for the Fuorisaloni, The Wonderful Milan Design Week 2018 – Let us be clear: there’s no place in the world we’d absolutely rather be in April rather than Milan. It’s like going to Paris in January and not going to the Maison et Objet. It’s virtually impossible to miss it. The event calls upon us and, like the expert navigators we all are, we listen. We have it all at Fuorisaloni, and we want you to enjoy the experience to its fullest. In this post, CovetED Magazine will take you on a journey to Milan to explore its fabulous Design week. We know you don’t want to miss it.
The “Fuorisalone” is the most important event in the world related to design. The term was chosen in order to define the events and exhibitions that bring joy to the entire city of Milan during the weeklong “Salone del Mobile.Milano”, happening in April. The ‘Salone del Mobile.Milano’ and ‘Fuorisalone’ define Milan’s Design Week, premiering the latest trends for the forthcoming year and heralding a ginormous tidal wave of events, exhibitions and presentations.
During the Fuorisalone, many locations usually feature longer opening hours. Furthermore, during Milan Design Week, many important brands located in the design districts introduce their new collections and host rather special events with live music and entertainment for a totally unmissable soiree. Young and talented designers from all over the world pack their innovative creations and come to Milan, rent one of the city’s garages from locals, and show their prototypes to the curious crowd and important stakeholders who visit the districts, talent-scouting for great ideas.
In the early 2000s, you said Fuorisalone and you really meant SuperStudio and Tortona. Today this district is the showcase of the biggest names in the design industry. In 2017, the Tortona Design District has played its trump cards: Base Milano, a new multifunctional venue, located at the former industrial Ansaldo complex, has hosted exhibitions and projects dedicated to the theme of nomadic living, with portable, floating houses, user-friendly objects and itinerant structures.
In 2017, the Ventura Lambrate district was split into two with the inauguration of a space located in the underground tunnels of the Central Railway Station (Ventura Centrale, 116). It is reasonable to think that during the Fuorisalone 2018 it will improve and give birth to a whole new design district.
This artsy neighbourhood with its narrow, cobbled streets boasts a dense concentration of antique shops, galleries, showrooms and prestigious locations. During the Fuorisalone, Brera offers a high-profile events calendar, featuring several of the world’s most prestigious brands, and focuses on attracting a design savvy, culturally oriented public. In 2017 Brera District’s core theme was dedicated to designing for children featuring also a special exhibition hosted at the Triennale Design Museum.
Besides the most well-established districts, the 2017 edition of Fuorisalone also welcomed the newly born Isola Design District, a new hub for design and creativity right under the shade of the Milanese skyscrapers and the Bosco Verticale. We hope to see a fantastic design showcase here in 2018!
Another one of the centre’s key districts, the ‘5 vie’ on its 2017 edition hosted a special event powered in collaboration with Milano Pride, called Design Pride’, a parade featuring allegoric floats led by Seletti to give exposure to young emerging talent and international schools. Let’s hope they will give us a proper encore in 2018!
