Located just 10 minutes from the Colosseum, in the Appian Way Archaeological Park, the 1,280 square-metre estate offers a two-storey villa surrounded by rambling 1.5-hectare gardens and a swimming pool and garage.
Being linked to a movie producer, the villa has been hosted a variety of Italian personalities, such as directors Federico Fellini, Vittorio de Sica, Roberto Rossellini, and Hollywood actors Anthony Quinn and Kirk Douglas. There’s even been a scene of a movie shot here – Alberto Sordi’s 1987 comedy Un tassinaro a New York.
The villa is comprised of a 680 square-metre main villa and an independently located outbuilding measuring 600 square metres, it’s even possible to buy each property separately.
The main villa was built in the 19th century, on the remains of a basalt quarry which was used during Roman times to build the famous Appian Way road.
While the home is certainly historic, it’s been modified a few times since the ’50s, and then completely restored in the ’80s after it was bought from Carlo Ponti by the current owner.
Inside the main villa, exposed beams frame the living room, which looks out onto the garden. Upstairs, there are five bedrooms, each with their own bathroom, and a library, just for good measure. Another room inside the main villa leads to a concrete vault, which is paved with Roman mosaic tiles depicting Medusa’s head.
Rumour has it, when Ponti owned the villa, he would welcome guests by escorting them through the most modest-looking villa, before leading them to the exquisite main space.
