Perhaps it is too predictable to think that designers will take inspiration from soft materials when the matter is designing a minimalist beautiful cosy chair. However, the Ukrainian design firm FAINA took the other way around when designing the curvy and cushioned DOMNA armchair. To bring it to life, FAINA’s creator and designer, Victoria Yakusha, committed to the study of the ancient ceramic sculptures of goddesses, drawing the necessary inspiration from them. CovetED can feel the influence of Venus figurines, stay with us!
“FAINA is Ukrainian design brand created by Victoria Yakusha in 2014. Made in the style of live minimalism, the collection items introduce “naive design”− simple in form, yet with a deep philosophy behind.”
“In search of new-old design messages, Victoria Yakusha conducted a study of the daily traditions of our ancestors. The times of Trypillia and the Scythian civilization, Slavs household habits − designer studied the forms, materials and craft techniques of those times and brought modern perusal to the traditional things. “
The sculptures that the female designer observed were discovered by archaeologists on the Trypillia site, situated in modern-day Ukraine, being used as a good luck symbol for families and their work. The result of the research, planning and execution by FAINA around the DOMNA armchair project, resulted in a cloud-like armchair that is comfortable, yet structured enough to work on its own in any living space (being an element that stands out).
“I am trying to create long-living design pieces with soul, that will become ‘family members’ for its owners,” explained Victoria.
Available on different materials, like polyester, wool and microfiber that resembles suede, the DOMNA armchair has appeared to dominate the “centre of attention” ranking. Each material has different colour options, from more natural hues to bright pink. It also features the option to add on a matching ottoman that takes on a very similar form.
Not much to say, we can only repeat ourselves, saying that the DOMNA armchair has appeared to dominate the “centre of attention” ranking.
