The USA is a country with many high-professional designers! Jonathan Adler is one of them. He is a potter, designer, and author. Adler launched his first ceramic collection in 1993 at Barneys New York. Five years later he expanded into home furnishings, opening his first namesake boutique in Manhattan. CovetED is here to let you know all about the designer, are you ready? Come and find out more about the projects!
After growing up in Bridgeton, New Jersey, Adler studied semiotics and art history at Brown University, as well as ceramics at the Rhode Island School of Design. In September 2008, he married his partner of 14 years, Simon Doonan, in California. Doonan and Adler live in New York City with their Norwich Terrier, Liberace. Jonathan Adler is an advocate for gay rights, Adler has publicly expressed his support for gay marriage.
If there are two things that can describe designer Jonathan Adler’s aesthetics are eccentricity and love for pottery. First of all, a healthy dose of eccentricity seems to be inherent to his every project. To his perennial love for pottery that has followed him long before he became a designer. Adler now has 26 stores worldwide, an e-commerce site, and a wholesale business with over 1,000 locations worldwide. In addition to ceramic design, Jonathan Adler Enterprises has expanded to become a design brand offering decorative objects, tabletop collections, bedding, bath accessories, gifts, candles, furniture, rugs, pillows, lighting, and most recently handbags.
Adler’s inspirations have come from Mid-century modern, art and global pop culture. Pottery artist Jonathan Adler is best known for his “happy” interior designs and line of home furnishings. He owns a design company that’s dedicated to bringing “grooviness to your home” with pottery, furniture, rugs, stationary, etc. Creating lavish interiors for venues including the Parker Palm Springs Hotel and Planet Hollywood Las Vegas, Adler has also designed for fashion house 7 For All Mankind.
The New York-based interior designer, Jonathan Adler, who is best known for his vibrant and generous interiors was the genius behind “Dreamland”, the designer’s latest creations and the topic of today’s article. Previously shown at the esteemed Interior Design Show in Toronto, Dreamland is a unique installation that was described as a portal to the world of fantasy. This over-the-top and awe-inspiring installation was conceived in collaboration with the Israeli luxury quartz brand, Caesarstone.
First of all, Jonathan Adler started his career as a potter. He discovered his passion at 12 and while he attended the Rhode Island School of Design, pottery was always a fixed point of his style. Later on, when Barneys acquired his collection of pots in 2003 he launched his first store in SoHo. Nowadays, with his own design company and all beautiful interior projects, Jonathan Adler furniture is a symbol of the “Modern American glamour”.
The humour underlining every creation and a passion for mid-century and pop culture recreate his signature whimsical style. For that reason in most of his projects, different textures of layers and tendencies coexist in the same flamboyantly colourful location. One of these whimsical style interior design projects was the Malibu Dream House project created for Barbie 50th birthday.
“Being eccentric should be as important as being a good person. The golden rule should be “do unto others and be eccentric.”
Following rules is not a law Jonathan swears by. While a more chaotic set better reflects his philosophy: fresh and fashionable are the right adjective to describes the various projects. As a result, he created through various collaborations with famous brands: from Mattel to Starbucks to interior design projects – residential and commercial ones. Parker Palm Springs hotel’s redesigning stands out as one of Jonathan Adler’s most iconic creations. Also, did you saw the famous Jonathan Adler pillows? All the patterns are perfect describes his creative style.
His company has a big Jonathan Adler lighting collection, pottery, furniture, and complete interior design services. But the most important this that the design company always strives to transform liveable and luxurious interiors into reality.
Adler is the author of three books, My Prescription for Anti-Depressive Living and part of the Happy Chic Book series, Jonathan Adler on Happy Chic Colors and Jonathan Adler on Happy Chic Accessories. Jonathan’s third book in the series 100 Ways to Happy Chic Your Life was published in November 2012. Adler was the lead judge on the Bravo series Top Design and a frequent presenter at design fairs and university seminars.
